Life is too short to save things for best. Handwash only, the dishwasher dulls the glaze over time. I have a cupboard full of glossy conker brown and duck egg blue Homestead Brown Denby. I use the very rare rectangular butter dish because it is so beautiful. The mugs come in various shapes and some have natural clay coloured glaze inside. Wartime regulations did not allow a coloured glaze inside crockery or any added decoration. Woods got away with the colours and the set of lines moulded in the Beryl Ware.
It is a bit harder to find the blue plates. DH smashed an egg cup, but eBay had one of the second type available. I was upset when a set of H.B. tea cups and saucers arrived so badly packed they were smashed to pieces. The refund did not make up for the sadness that they had been so little loved.9 -
Thanks @joedenise, I'll keep my eye out for itI'm unsure about my spine, I think it's holding me back.4

joedenise said:@YoungBlueEyes I use a wash in product to reproof waterproof things. It's not cheap and you can only do 2 items at a time and does need to be redone regularly but at least it's easy to use! It's a liquid product which you just pour into the machine in the same way you would washing liquid. The one I use is Nikwax.
I use it mainly for DH's golfing stuff jackets and trousers.7 -

The refund did not make up for the sadness that they had been so little loved.I've always wanted some of the wartime pieces and have a coffee pot that has the natural glaze inside and the Denby stamp. In the blue-lined ones I have a coffee pot, tea pot, divided serving dish, milk jug, sugar bowl and one of those ultra-nice-to-hold mugs with the concave sides.
I contacted Denby who advised me Homestead Blue is dishwasher-proof but you are right, glazes will tend to dull.

Just to pop back in to second @Miro on Nikwax - always better bought by the litre than the little bottles as it doesn't have a shelf life that we've discovered & if you hesitate to apply it & bake it in your own drier, it can be casually added at a launderette which gets hotter & "bakes it in better" IMHO.
We haven't really got into waxed garments, but if you want wool relanolising, do it in summer, use the bathtub & let it air dry. I grant you full length capes do attract a bit of "Hoy, Gandalf!" attention, but being warm & dry even in pouring rain (as well as a lot safer by open fires, & eco friendly, and I'll just stop there for the time being) has its advantages.7 -
I'll go get me some Nikwax then, thanks everyone
Also I would be using the laundrette for the 'baking' for I don't have a tumbler.
Agree about being warm and dry. Many moons ago when I was a dog trainer, I paid a bunch of money on my work clothes - boots, a pair of wellies, and a full brompton. I wasn't gonna be standing in a field cold and wet just because the field was cold and wet!I'm unsure about my spine, I think it's holding me back.5 -

I went out consciously looking for more CDs. Since I bought my music system the other week, I have been having regular kitchen disco sessions. Lots of stuff can be streamed via USB / Bluetooth, but I'd rather not tie up my phone and tablets so am v happy to stick with discs for now. I ended up with 3 for 50p each - was disappointed when I got home to find that one is actually a home made recording on a CD-Rom stuck into a genuine cover! I also bought some string lights, a large mug and a lined skirt with my ungrateful sister in mind. Total spend: £4.No books for me today. No man is worth crawling on this earth.
So much to read, so little time.3 -
I do enjoy repurposing things and today I found this candle sconce. My first thought (as I spotted it standing on its wall bracket) was that it would be excellent for displaying bangles……
My next though was that it reminded me of a raptor/dragon
A friend then suggested the addition of a rechargeable light bulb
I feel a creative upcycling project being added to the to do list.✒️ Declutter 2025👗 Fashion on the Ration 2025 61/66 coupons (5 coupons silver boots)✒️Declutter 2024 🏅🏅🏅(DSis 🏅🏅)
