  • I complete a tax return for all my little bits on the side, mystery shopping, surveys and I do some covert price checking that brings me in around £700 a month.
I changed job last year and I ended up owing my previous employer nearly £800 as I took nearly a month of my leave to go to Florida in the April. I've been doing some digging and I think I can deduct this figure from the amount the HMRC think I got paid, and obviously I paid tax on this £800 through PAYE. I'll submit the letter etc showing the proof of overpayment. This is bringing the tax bill down by just under £200 and they are no longer asking I pay next years tax early. I think I'll check with my friend who is an accountant before I submit it though. I'm such a worry pot!!
I remember reading about your tax in your diary. I keep saying I'll put the tax away but I never do.....lesson learnt!! I still don't see how the tax is so high though. I had the same last year. I made £1095 and paid £419 in tax. I thought it was a mistake and I've been waiting for them to calculate my tax for last year hoping I would get a refund. I put it down to the changing my main employment last year and I went onto an emergency tax code.

definniety worth asking them to check it over!
Ive got a nice tax pot going now and i put 20% across of earnings each week, hopefully this will be more than needed, but I would rather have a nice buffer than a shock like last year!
I will be starting this ASAP!!

  • Up and about early this morning. Its looking like a really miserable day again. I really hope next weekend is better. I want to get all the dogs bedding washed, spare bed, settee cushion, everything I can think of really before my cheap fix ends next Monday. I'm really not sure what to do with this, do I just go with the standard rate or take a fix. It's all the unknown at the moment for me.
Time for me to get out and about for my 2 MS. Not big money makers today, £13 from the both of them. I suppose it all adds up though.
I spoke to my friend about my tax return and she said I didn't earn the £800 from my previous employer as I had to give it back so I should deduct it from my earnings, therefore the tax bill is £1508. Still way more than I thought I should pay!! I think I'm going to add that to my debt figure, I'll take a look at that later but it looks like July will not be a good month when I do the the end of month next week.

  • I need to start todays entry by saying I'm sorry to all those who PM'd me. I did not even notice and for some reason since the site updated I am not even getting email notifications from MSE. I have replied to you all now!!

I had a really good nights sleep last night and I appear to be full of energy this morning. I have already done the majority of the Saturday clean. We have white quartz worktop in the kitchen and I noticed the ring from a tin has left a mark on it. I've tried everything to get it out this morning but nothing appears to have worked so I'll have to see what I can get to sort that.
The weather is disgusting this morning, I have 2 MS to do, I don't think I'm going to bother looking for anymore as I don't want to be out in this too long. That will be another £24 when I get paid for that.

I had an email from the HMRC this morning to say my tax code has changed. When I logged in I noticed its got an 'X' on the end, I'm sure that what I had last year and it was an emergency code so I will need to have a look into this. Not sure why there should have even been a change.

I will list a few bit on Vinted, actually I will make this my next job as I can't do my MS till 10am. I keep saying I'll do this but can never be bothered. I'm also making corned beef pie for dinner, it DH favourite but we don't really have it that often.

    Have a great weekend everyone!!
Hello - am an avid reader and am amazed at your progress. Especially your Prolific amounts, i get nowhere near that many surveys!
I too have a white quartz worktop and the only things I can use to get stubborn marks off is The Pink Stuff. Not sure if you have tried that but it has never let me down- even when my sister stained it with a curry !

Good luck, and I will keep on reading

  • I've been looking into the figures today and to be able to pay the tax bill by the end Jan 24, I need to find £215.43 a month. That includes this month, so I have the challenge of finding this in a week!! I have a few payments expected in but I will still need to find some. I expect to get:
    Pinecone- £3
    MS- £98
    BA Refund- £44
    Shoppix -£10

£155 means another £60 to find this month

If the pink stuff doesn’t work you could maybe claim off the house insurance ? Or phone a quartz company ?

I have black granite and find that baking powder or bicarbonate of soda paste left on for a few hours and then rubbed up gently with scrunched up foil works very well. Method to polish after. This cleared a small but noticeable stain ffrom splashing oven pride on it.
Mama read so much about the dangers of drinking alcohol and eating chocolate that she immediately gave up reading.
  • Thank you for all of your advice, hopefully one of them works as claiming on the house insurance is the last thing I want.

  • I haven't slept so well last night, I've been awake early and caught £2.87 worth of surveys on Prolific. One MS payment of £17.65 has hit my bank account so that has gone straight to the tax payment.
The weather is sounding horrendous again this morning, haven't got out of bed and opened the curtains yet but I can hear its not good. I don't have far to travel to work this morning so I can take my time getting ready. I'm off tomorrow, a family friend had a tragic, freak accident while we were on holidays and didn't make it so we have her funeral. Its also DH cousins 30th so we have a little gathering at his aunties house to attend.

Talking of house insurance above has reminded me I need to shop around for new cover starting in a couple of weeks time. I'm sure I can get that cheaper than the renewal.

    Have a good day everyone!

Wow, that is an impressive amount you have found. I have every confidence that you can find that last £60.

Are you paying the tax man each time you have a bit of money? monthly? or a one-off payment in January?
