The Final Bite of the Cherry- Journey to Clear £66k

  • I complete a tax return for all my little bits on the side, mystery shopping, surveys and I do some covert price checking that brings me in around £700 a month.
I changed job last year and I ended up owing my previous employer nearly £800 as I took nearly a month of my leave to go to Florida in the April. I've been doing some digging and I think I can deduct this figure from the amount the HMRC think I got paid, and obviously I paid tax on this £800 through PAYE. I'll submit the letter etc showing the proof of overpayment. This is bringing the tax bill down by just under £200 and they are no longer asking I pay next years tax early. I think I'll check with my friend who is an accountant before I submit it though. I'm such a worry pot!!
I remember reading about your tax in your diary. I keep saying I'll put the tax away but I never do.....lesson learnt!! I still don't see how the tax is so high though. I had the same last year. I made £1095 and paid £419 in tax. I thought it was a mistake and I've been waiting for them to calculate my tax for last year hoping I would get a refund. I put it down to the changing my main employment last year and I went onto an emergency tax code.

Its a complete pain if I'm honest but I've got used to the money now so I can't stop it especially while I'm paying off debt.

ooo that sounds cool ish lol
  • I only completed one of my MS today, there was no where to park at the one and the rain was horrendous so there was no way I was walking far. So 1 completed for £12. I had a £15 survey on Prolific this afternoon and it crashed when I was about a quarter of the way. I messaged the researcher and they paid me the full £15 straight away do that was good news. Thats withdrawn but will now be going into my new YNAB category of Tax Bill.
I'm so annoyed with myself but I think I will give them a call to see why I am paying so much tax. Tomorrow I have 2 mystery shops and will just sit and watch the Grand Prix in the afternoon. I was in tears seeing Lewis get pole after so long this afternoon. DH says I'm nuts lol!!

DH is also over the moon about Lewis as he is a massive F1 fan, hoping for a win 🥇 tomorrow! Nightmare about your tax, I have no idea how it works but it doesn’t sound like you should be paying that much tax on that much earnings.

thank you for the info regarding the emails I will comment on there as I found them a reminder to check in xx

definniety worth asking them to check it over!
Ive got a nice tax pot going now and i put 20% across of earnings each week, hopefully this will be more than needed, but I would rather have a nice buffer than a shock like last year!

We are both massive fans, we went to the Monaco Grand Prix for our honeymoon. I loved the atmosphere but you don't really get to see the actual race lol!!

Is there any news on you getting the keys to your house. I hope living with your mother is going well.
