Daily Gas Usage?

2 bed flat built in 1968, I'm in the middle, one below and one above. I finally bit the bullet and spent £4k on replacing the original single glazed wooden frames with double glazed units in October, partly spurned on by the energy price increase and my (admittingly very strange) neighbour who claimed he used no gas heating last winter, I saw his British gas bill and it was £9 per month.
I used to put window film up November to April, made a difference and stopped the condensation, would cost about £20 each year.
Well I failed to match my neighbours no heating used, it got down to 12c in the flat so the heating came on- I work from home so I am here 24/7. I don't have a smart meter but I did find a website built by a London church that works out all the daily costs for you.
Energy Prices, Energy Crisis - What might you be paying with the introduction of the new energy price cap? (godisgiving.org)
I have been using consistently £5.20 a day in gas since this cold snap started. I have the heating on from 7am to 20:30 and occasionally I may also have the gas fire on in the lounge in the evening for maybe 20 mins as it pumps out a lot of heat even on the lowest setting although most of the energy goes up the chimney.
Last winter I wasn't using the heating so much but had an oil fired radiator on the room I spend all day in working, mistakenly thought that this would be cheaper. This year ive realised its probably more cost effective to have the CH on al day and heat the entire home than use electricity to heat the one room.
I'm up to date with my bills and was £260 in credit, I know this freezing spell wont be representative of all winter and it will soon be a bit milder so it will be interesting to do another reading and work out the daily cost again. So far, so good.
Edit to add- on the South Coast and using at peak approx. 54kwh Gas a day.1 -
2 days ago we used 203kW/h a day of gas by heating to 18.5C. Had a little heart attacks and reduced the temp to 16.9C yesterday and had the woodburner going after work in the living room. That helped to reduce the gas usage to 164kW/h a day, so it's a win in my book. Had to relocate my desk to the bedroom as it has 2 radiators and heats up quicker than the office.
I must say I felt unwell and got a headache when I spent any time in the kitchen that gets down to 14-15C. Really can feel the effects of low temp on the body. As soon as the woodburner was on I felt much better.0 -

Averaging about £8 of gas and £3 for electric per day this last fortnight. All on subsidised rates.Old 3 bed detached cottage in Somerset. Trying to keep the night temp about 11 and evening temp of 15 but it's a struggle ! I "could" turn the boiler temp up but really quite frightened of the consequences !0

Our thermostat is in the hallway and currently at 12 degrees (it's usually at 10 with no heating). The heater has been on since 11.30am. I want to see what temperature the thermostat will hit. All rooms have TRVsb set at 4 or 3.
My question is if we set the boiler to come on if the thermostat falls below 11 then wouldn't the booklet essentially be on pretty much all the time since our normal thermostat temp is usually 10?
Does that make sense?0 -
Your thermostat doesn't know what the "normal without heating" temperature is. It only knows what the actual temperature is.
If your thermostat is set to 11, and the temperature is 12, your boiler should be off.0 -
Just calculated mine.
1965 house. Cavity insulation downstairs. Upstairs 2000 built extension timber with felt cladding and insulation. 5 bed semi detached in the country side with a field next door (lots of north-east winds).
Currently heating my house is getting around a low of 13c overnight, and achieving around 16c maximum. Not doing very well. 3hrs heating in the morning. 8hrs in the evening. Constantly on because it's not getting to thermostat temp (18c) in this current cold snap.
Calculated cost on gas is £9.50 or so a day.0 -
I left our heating off the other night and the kitchen was 8 when we went down in the morning ! It took all day pretty much to get it back to 15 so the heating is on 24hr with a backup of 12 at night now. However, it was -9 that morning so the temperature differential was about 17 degrees between inside and out, and when I think about it like that it doesn't seem too bad
Bloody freezing though and i'll be glad when this cold snap is over.
We still have the same amount of snow on the roof as we did last Sunday so it's been pretty much below freezing all week and now to add insult to injury i've got some frost heave under the front door in the porch and it won't open1
