matelodave said:Its a bit like comparing the fuel consumption of a Fiat 500 with a Toyota Land cruiser . You just cannot equate the cost of heating with a fairly modern reasonably well insulated property with a 1930's house. Even less so if you dont know what sort of heating system, boiler or controls you are comparing.
A 20 year old boiler with a pilot light with an efficiency of say 60% just cant compare or compete with a modern condensing boiler which could have an efficiency of better than 90% with modern controls and TRV's.According to my IHD, I used 31KW of gas today (Thursday), and that is with a vintage Baxi back boiler. Temperature in the hall has been at 18-19°C all day whilst it was down to 1.7°C for most of the night. Solar gains from the south facing windows have really helped to keep the temperature up during the day, and I had the fire lit for a few hours in the lounge. So more like a BL Mini with a bottle of NOX in the boot

I used 4 units (45kWh) on Wednesday when I read my meter over a 24hr period, had the heating on for an extra couple of hours during the day to keep the temp above 16c. That cost £4.62, or approx £5 with the standing charge. I’m just resigned to spending money on it this month, esp during this cold snap.My boiler is running at 72c flow temp as anything less just doesn’t seem to make the house warm up quickly. It still says it’s running in high efficiency mode though. The lounge is the coldest room being above the cellar & it had dropped to 13.2c overnight from 18c. Heating goes off at 8pm. It’s still only at 16c now after an hour of the heating being on (all the downstairs internal doors were wide open though, I’ll close them tonight).1

We used 50kWh yesterday which is high for our house (3 year old 3 bed detached "new build").
The heating is "on" all day just at different temperatures. 19 for an hour in the morning while we get up and ready for work, 16 during the day when we are at work, 20 for 4 hours in the evening and then 16 degrees overnight.
Last year for December and January we averaged about 40kWh per day gas. But it was milder.

We've been using typically 4 units per day over the last week or so, which is about £4.40, but yesterday it was double that.I was being moaned at for leaving the heating on all day, so yesterday it was turned off, and it took it like 5 hours to get the house back to 17c last night.0

Whole house 20oC 24/7 (except the hard to heat vaulted ceiling kitchen which averages at 18oC until the oven or other kitchen appliances are used) We only have electricity
Currently costing £5.85 for heating and hot water0 -

Worcester Bosch Greenstar 30i combi boiler heating to 19-20C from 6am to midnight, setback to 17.5C overnight, connected in EMS mode to Tado smart modulating thermostat. Annual gas usage 6000kWh; electricity 2000kWh.0 -
I'm hoping that I will be eligible for the home improvement grants come April. I've been quoted over £1700 for cavity wall insulation. In certain that would help retain the majority of the heat although aware it won't do the job completely0

And it looks like I'm not the only one - https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-tyne-63841485Had CWI here, and to be honest, I found it made no difference. Now spending my money on internal wall insulation, and seeing significant improvements as I do each room.

Averaging 40kwh somehow - i use the heating for about an hour a day when I start to see my breath when inside, otherwise, heating is off, cant afford it.0
