Sorry re your car
From what you said a temp gauge reading "normal" means it was working.
I've seen drivers driving along the m-way oblivious to the smoke behind them.
From what you said it looks like a coolant leak/burst hose etc.
I'm no mechaic but years of driving many cars for self and family, so I think I
may be spot on
NB: When did you get the car back and for how long and how many miles had you driven it since the return from garage
We collected the car on the 19th October, and the exact milage needs to be confirmed when we check the receipt and the milage on the car, but as an estimate I would say no more than 500 miles maximum.
Thankyou for your reply. Is this something that should have been foreseen/predicted by the garage, or possibly caused? Should the MOT/Service have lasted longer than the timescale/miles it has? Just trying to work out if the garage that undertook the work was potentially at fault, and it's worth exploring...or if we just scrap the car and look at alternative options.
Thankyou
About 500 miles - if the garage had created a fault like an airlock etc, then you would have noted higher temp before, I'm certain
It could be a faulty thermostat but i am no mechanical expert but I can't see the garage knowing about a fualt like that inc the mot people.
What mot can spot is as well as a service are worn hoses etc but I'm confident on a 16 plat car as you describe it it was not the case. Are there any signs of a hose coming off?
IMHO, I could not hold the garage to account without firm evidence and if they had forgtten to put the water in or not enough or left a lose hose etc, you would have soon noted that and possibly see leaks on your drive or where the car is parked
I think it just very bad luck..-1 -
Car_54 said:OP, what did the garage do in addition to the brakes and service?
It must have been something substantial to run up a £1,400 bill.0 -

This is very helpful! I was unsure if anyone was potentially at fault or like you said...just very bad luck!I certainly don't want to be going back to them raising it as an issue if it isn't actually their fault at all. Which is why I turned to this forum to seek some advice!
There hasn't been anything leaking on the street where we park the car etc.2 -
I agree with previous, after a month of normal operation it would suggest the coolant was OK after the service. Then something happened, could be a burst pipe, pipe that disconnected etc. Knowing what that event was is key. Pinning on the garage requires hard evidence, it could all just be a coincidence.1

Yes I definitely don't want to accuse them of missing something, when I don't know if they did or not.
Maybe it's just terrible luck...! Should I ask the garage that's got it now to try and identify if there's a leak/hose loose and find the cause? Or just cut our losses and scrap it?0 -
The garage they took it too afterwards would have mentioned a burst/disconnected pipe or a hole in the radiator or possibly broken fan/fan belt.0

Thankyou0 -
he's told us the engine has seized, stated the engine coolant was empty and its overheated and melted the engine inside.
Can the garage that has the car now give an indication as to the cause of no coolant?

I bought a 16 plate jaguar approved at 3 years old with 22,000 on the clock, it's done 37,000 now, just had it serviced for £274 and was told 100% nothing wrong with it, had MOT at Halfords free
I'm amazed at the cost you were charged and the work that had to be done. You say its ex mobility which are usually a good low mileage buy.
How many miles has it done now ?
I'm not a mechanic either but have had lots of different cars, repaired them myself too till they got to technical
I'm guessing either a burst hose from something hitting it or, maybe the service drained the coolant that way and didn't tighten up properly after. As regarding not spotting a temperature rise everyone doesn't drive staring at the gauges so you could have missed that.1 -
I would say at a guess that your 308 has a petrol engine, belt driven. I would guess that the timing belt has broken or is disintegrating and the bits off the belt have got in the engine , and now needs a new engine.
this is a fault on certian 2008, 208, 3008 and 308s.
peugeot do know about this fault. you need to talk to your nearest pegeot dealer.
failing that get me the reg and I'll see what I can find out. don't have that software on this pc though. I have it but elsewhere.0
