That used to be the case round here but since the price rises, BP, Texaco and Esso have been consistently 2 or 3p cheaper than the supermarkets with the exception of Morrisons.born_again said:Supermarkets round here are at least 5p to10p a ltr cheaper than the branded garages... Who's ripping who off? There seems to be no rhyme nor reason to it. For many years round here, Morrisons and Asda were the same price, and the cheapest of all the local stations. But in the last 6 months or so, Morrisons is far more expensive - even more expensive that the nearest Esso, which always used to be one of the more expensive ones.Granted, the Asda station is only pay-at-the-pump, there's no cashier/kiosk. Don't know if that means their staffing costs are lower so they can afford to sell fuel more cheaply? But whatever, it's always about 5 or 6 pence-per-litre cheaper than the competition.

Crude oil $77.7 a barrel, 159 litres, about 41p a litre. Margins 10p, fuel duty 58p, refining cost 23p VAT@ 20% (Yes, we pay VAT on the duty - what a swizz!) so a total of about...£1.58 a litre. It's £1.56 round here so I'm not far off.

are you sure? It's scrawled all over the side of a Tesco branded tanker. The inference is clear and deliberate.user1977 said:
That doesn't appear to be a claim about their fuel prices though.molerat said:Car_54 said:
I don't believe Tesco have ever had that on their lorries.ontheroad1970 said:I believe Tesco lorries still have "Why Pay More" written on them. Time for action with ASA as Tesco is usually the most expensive in Port Talbot area - in fact an Esso on Bath Road at Heathrow is cheaper than them

If you look you'll see what it's advertising tesco.com doesn't sell fuel online

The other part of the advert was car insurance.Mortgage started 2020, aiming to clear 31/12/2029.0 -
A local BP garage was always 4-5p more than the Sainsburys a few hundred metres away.
The BP garage was completely rebuilt and reopened earlier this year with a Coop shop and the petrol is now consistently 3-4p cheaper than Sainsburys.0 -
Our local bp has been up to 15p pl more and today its 8p i think this is the standard diesel
A few months ago the locals became cheaper
The main point MSE complains as does RAC &AA but it carrys on - when prices drop oil per b, not at the pumps but when oil price rises it goes up overnight
We are driving less and when it was 200p at the supermarkets a few months back the once packed forecourts hardly had any business. Even now at 187/90 they seem to habe less customers0 -
Tesco close to the most expensive fuel in our area.
I'm sure one of them will crack soon and tell us they're doing us all a favour and leading prices downwards.

I think the real message is not to assume that supermarkets are cheap. They might have been in The Olden Days when they were trying to attract custom to the supermarket with low fuel prices. Now they don't need to as most independent garages closed when the cost of refurbishment to comply with regulations and the miniscule profit on fuel compared to the value of the land meant they turned into houses or convenience stores.I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

Last week on a 70 mile regular journey I ignored the two local stations I passed knowing I could jump off the motorway to buy fuel from Morrisons, bit miffed when it was 2-3p more expensive. Slightly different route on the way home I noticed another two garages with cheaper fuel. I'd got used to assuming the supermarkets were cheaper.facade said:I think the real message is not to assume that supermarkets are cheap.
