  • Hi all
I have been reading this forum for a number of months with regards to energy and mortgage problems so have decided to join the forum party!

We took part in trial last Tuesday and hit our target of a 40% reduction  between  5-6pm , we actually made a 56% reduction.

Tonight we have been asked to make another 40% reduction. The things you do for 72p

  • Hi Jlewie, That's a great result! How did you get the consumption down?

I've got mine tonight too, and wondering what we can do to really make an impact. I don't tend to cook until later in the evening, so the oven off anyway.. I'll be turning off plugs, big tv off etc. It sounds like everyone has done really well so far, hoping I can too.

When you signed up to this did you get confirmation of it other than the webpage confirming?

I got the email asking me to sign up on Friday, I signed up but haven't heard anything from Eon since.
  • Does anyone know if any Sainsbury's Energy customers are being invited to this?

We reduced our usage by 60% and got £3.52.  The main difference from usual was that the cooker wasn't on.
Hi Marypw, That is great! I'm doing my first one today between 5.30 and 6.30. My target is 40% reduction.

As well as the oven, did you switch other bits off? Our usage is pretty low at that time anyway, so trying to think of things to turn off! :) I'm thinking the freezers will happily survive for an hour.
No, we left everything on (tv, lights, fridge, freezer etc) - no idea how they work it out!
Just done it again this evening, so that will be interesting.

  • Energy Shift is the E.ON Next initiative for customers who want to get involved in the National Grid’s Demand Flexibility Service and be rewarded for reducing their energy use during peak time events.

We have been busy behind the scenes working with the National Grid to make taking part as easy as possible through a personalised experience for our customers. Taking part in Energy Shift will help customers to reduce their bills and be paid for using less energy at certain peak times. It’s a great way to reduce energy, carbon and bills.

    How does it work?

Energy Shift will run events asking customers to reduce their electricity use during a set time.

Participating customers will be given a personal target based on their average daily energy use. All customers who successfully reduce their electricity use to hit their personal target will receive credit to their E.ON Next account.

By joining Energy Shift, customers can take part in as many (or as few) Energy Shift events as suit them.

Once you join, there are four simple steps:

    1. You will get an alert the day before each Energy Shift event.
    2. Confirm you are taking part.
    3. Use less energy during the event to meet your personal target.
    4. Save money on your bill and earn credit.

We took part in the first test event (15 Nov) held by the National Grid with a small number of E.ON Next customers so that we could fine tune the scheme. In the test event 70% of our customers who took part received money off their energy bill. In fact during the one hour test E.ON Next customers saved the equivalent energy of powering a 50w TV for 17 years!

    Who can take part?

To get involved you will need a smart meter that automatically sends half hourly readings, so we can calculate your daily electricity use. If you want to get a smart meter to take part or switch your current smart meter to half-hourly reading then find out how on our smart meter page.

If you’re an E.ON Next customer we’ll contact you if you are eligible to take part in Energy Shift – so keep an eye on your inbox. Energy shift is a great opportunity to earn rewards for saving energy to lower your bills this winter.

You will not be able to join if you have a Capacity Market contract or take part in any balancing mechanisms.

    Ideas to reduce energy use.

Hitting your goal is simpler than you might think. There are lots of ways you can reduce your energy use during an Energy Shift event.

Try shaking up your daily routine a little by changing when you use your most energy intensive appliances. For example, you could put your dishwasher on overnight or have your hot meal at lunchtime. This is a great opportunity to try out new ways to plan your day.

Find energy efficient alternatives for your current activities. Most of us do the majority of our cooking in the oven or on the hob. However, it is far more energy efficient to use a microwave or air fryer to heat your meal. Try switching out the big screen TV for your tablet or smartphone for an hour or two - it takes less energy to charge your device than to power your TV. Plus, there will be no more fighting for the remote.

Make the most of some distraction free time and try going unplugged for a few hours. Switch out screen time for a book or a comic, try out a delicious new heat-free recipe, or spend some quality time together getting crafty or playing a board game. Before you get too carried away though, just make sure you are still powering your home essentials.

Finally, remember you can always go out. Businesses will still be using their usual energy, so you can cut down on your electricity by using theirs. If you are planning a meal out or a trip to the cinema try to schedule during an Energy Shift event. Or even simply use the time to walk your dog and run your errands.

There are lots more ways you can save energy during Energy Shift events, so get creative and you’ll smash your targets in no time.

    Demand Flexibility Service.

The Demand Flexibility Service (DFS) is a project being run by the National Grid Electricity Supply Operators (ESO) that is available to energy suppliers. We have opted to take part through our Energy Shift scheme – to help our customers to get involved.

The aim of the DFS is to reduce energy use at peak times to make the grid greener this winter. Lowering peak time energy usage will make use of more off-peak renewable energy, lower peak time energy prices, and avoid using back-up coal generators that are heavily polluting.

Learn more about the Demand Flexibility Service and how it will keep Britain’s energy cleaner over the winter.

As an E.ON Next customer we will contact you if you are eligible to take part in Energy Shift. Joining Energy shift is a great opportunity be rewarded for saving energy and lower your bills. For more helpful resources to save money over winter, you can access support from us, charities and the government.

Make your home smarter with a smart meter.

Switching to a smart meter means you can see exactly what you are spending on your energy in real time. Knowledge is power when it comes to powering your home, so take control of your energy use and make budgeting a cinch. Together we can reduce energy bills as well as carbon emissions. Find out how you can get a smart meter for your home.

    Hi Myth123,

I received an email reminder on the day asking me to confirm I was taking part, then a text an hour before it started.

What does that mean? What about E7 tariffs?

If you don't know what it means, it doesn't apply to you.

It's for big players who are already involved with market trading - quite why it's mentioned in an FAQ I don't know - perhaps to account for unusual smart trials for demand side management.
