Octopus Saving Session

I am saying I stayed honest, I didnt use extra energy in the proceeding hours to game the system, what you want to interpret that is up to you.armistice said:Chrysalis said:I see some people making decent money from this now the grid's silly formula got worked out, I stayed honest though and have just under £2 so far.

If you have a look through this thread, most of the people commenting here didn't use extra energy either. They simply shifted their energy use from one period to another, which in effect is the reason for having a saving session (i.e. it is not to stop using energy altogether, but to use it at a different time).Chrysalis said:

Electricity: 3kw south facing solar array, EV, Octopus intelligent2 -
We have no EV or other really heavy duty items. We used an extra 2 kWh last week and our saving sessions earned us £17.28. That's a net gain of about £16.50.I am a mortgage broker. I'm no expert but, thinking it through, it's very likely that if the electric companies purchase segments of power in advance, they then really want it used, and this would apply whether the person has shifted their normal use from that saving hour or whether they're "gaming the system".Warning: any unnecessary disclaimers appearing under my posts do not bear any connection with reality, either intended, accidental or otherwise. Dont know what to say, people seem easily offended for interpreting something in their own way, sorry I wont apologise for something I didnt say, you just need to get over it really.0

It's mostly around supply. The period 1-3 hours before the peak is unlikely to be a high demand period itself, so if the grid can cope with the load shift then that's objective achieved. If so much load is shifted that the 1-3 hour prior period just becomes the new peak, then the coal burning / power outages just start early. Seems highly unlikely that enough people will shift enough power for the latter.ballisticbrian said:I'm no expert but, thinking it through, it's very likely that if the electric companies purchase segments of power in advance, they then really want it used, and this would apply whether the person has shifted their normal use from that saving hour or whether they're "gaming the system".

I think that depends on when the current in day adjustment calculation is modified.masonic said:

And whether the current significant financial benefit of shifting to the IDA (and potentially using extra unnecessary energy) gets picked up by mainstream or social media, or posted on HotUKDeals etc.0 -
True, the current system won't survive its mechanics becoming popular knowledge. I'd be interested if anyone has any stats on load during the IDA period vs the highly advertised reduction during the SS.k_man said:
