Octopus Saving Session

    Hi,

This evening, coal-fired power stations are on standby to deliver extra power, should it be needed to balance the grid.

This means every kWh saved in today’s Saving Session from 5-6pm will make a real difference in reducing our need for dirty fuel.

On a practical level, this also makes it our most valuable Saving Session yet – offering 2,700 Octopoints per kWh saved: a massive 50% more than usual.

If you’re one of the more than 300,000 customers already opted in to this event: thank you. I’m excited to see the shift we can achieve.

If you possibly can, I urge you to join in: together, let’s prove we don’t need dirty coal.

  • I’m confused about reference to using more electricity than usual in the hours before the saving session to maximise the amount earned,  as the info from Octopus says they compare normal usage at time of the session.  Am I missing something?

Yeh. There is a thing called the "In Day Adjustment" which takes place from 4 hours before, until 1 hour before the start of a session. This is used to "normalise" the specific day against your history.

By increasing usage in that period, you essentially make it appear that you're going to use a lot more energy today, and so your historical averages for the saving session times are increased accordingly, meaning you "save" more during the saving session.

The National Grid came up with a formula that the energy companies have to use to calculate your "reward".

Some clever folks on these forums noticed that the amount is mostly about the period 1-4 hours before a Session starts, so 1pm-4pm for today's 5pm-6pm Session. If you shift everything you can today to that 3 hour period, you will gain more reward. It strangely is more about what you use in that period than how much you cut down to normal during the Session. Obviously we all try to use less then too though.

Do you get rewarded on gas usage reduction as well or is it only for Electric?
