2008 - Live on £4000 for a full year.

  • To be honest I live on around £2,700 a year including rent, other bills, feeding myself and my mice. All my living costs come out of it and at most I probably get £3,000 a year. I do live with 4 other people though so that is probably how I can do this as we pay rent and bills equally (rent it self for me a year is £1,560  ). So that means if on the £2,700 - £1,560 = £1,140 for CT, bills and everything else I need including food. So in esence I live off of less than £1,000 when CT is taken off  . £4,000 is starting to look good to me, if I had that much I'd be doing this :rotfl: . I am a VERY low maitenance girl as my BF says (and he lives on around £5,000 a year so doesn't have alot of money either after rent, CT, bills, motorbike stuff etc).

I'll go for £3,000 to cover everything if I'm allowed (I don't have a debt of any kind exept I do owe my parents £110 which I plan on giving them back very soon and £200 to my adult account which I should not have used but needed to. Hrm I do owe my parents around £24k for the private college they sent me to for two years but I'm the only one that plans on giving that back as my parents don't seem to care but I know they will need it in time so  ). It may go up due to inflation etc but I don't know about that as it stands. Hoping fo £3,000 if you'll have me :o .
I am a vegan woman. My OH is a lovely omni guy :D

Can you live on £4000 a year?
Throughout 2007 there were several of us accepted this challenge for various reasons. With only a week or two to go, I can say that it IS possible and I WILL succeed. I'm setting myself the exact same challenge for 2008 and have heard from a few people that would like to know how it's done.

Edited in - For those participating in the original challenge, £4000 is for EVERYTHING except rent/mortgage, council tax/water rates. Hopefully, this should avoid confusion.

If anyone is interested, then let me know here and we'll get this challenge going from 1st January 2008. The target figure is for essentials and regular household bills. It does NOT include rent, mortgage payments, council tax or water rates. It does not include repaying debts, essential work related expenses or 'luxury' items such as holidays - that's what everything over the target figure is for. That and, of course, savings.

Set your targets, I can list them here, then from 01/01/08 you deduct your essential spending throughout the year, not forgetting that the amount includes gifts for friends and family for birthdays, Christmas etc.

The Live on £4,000 a year Challenge starts here - have you got what it takes to succeed? The figure was calculated against minimum wage earnings, feel free to join using your own target figure. If you have a family, then you should be in receipt of Family Allowance/Child Benefit, which is over and above the 4k.

OK, save all the new people trying to find the basics... this is the most up to date copy of post 1 as at... umm.... 1.40am on the 30th December 2007... less than 46.5 hours to go and counting :T

The red typing relates to the original challenge, which you won't find on MSE, so don't worry about it. I will be following the red one for the second time around :)

I'll be right back with an update on your number and set your target at £3920 to reflect the extra day in 2008

Really sorry about that and I'm really sorry to see Mumzy leave! Oh, Mumzy... I'll visit you often in the sealed pot challenge, smoking quitters and grocery challenge and feel free to pop in here anytime :)

Well, that has changed things a little, so, would you mind slipping in at number 2 so we don't have a gap? Thank you in advance and I've already updated post one to reflect the changes :)

    Ooh I know honey.

It wasn't so much his being a size 12 now I was  about, but thinking about how many more "growing years" he has left and what size he might end up at.

My daughters feet aren't so much big as wide but I do worry what size she'll end up at cos although I'm a size 5-6 her granny sometimes finds size 9 a bit tight so I'm worried she'll take after her side of the family in shoe size

Girls shoes can be really tough to find above a size 9 (although if she gets bigger than a 9 somebody did recommend that we try shops catering for transvestites and drag queens as they do girly shoes up to about a size 13 - but I bet they're not very practical though huh? :D )

Is it me or are kids feet getting bigger every generation?

My Nan is a 2, my mum wears a 3.5, I'm a 5.5 really I s'pose and my daughter's currently in a 7 but I bet when we take her to Clarks for the next pair she'll have gone up a size.

.... can't wait for this all to kick off and then we can compare notes and I'll be able to let you into a couple of little secrets about how to 'beat the blues' of this challenge when things look particularly tough  :D:D

I can't wait either, nyk! I can't remember a New Year that was so happily anticipated:rotfl:

Your tips to 'beat the blues' will be a great help to us all, I think, once the initial euphoria of starting the challenge has worn off and we're all finding it a bit of a struggle:eek: . Probably about mid-January in my case:o

    Good Luck everyone:beer:
