That's what I thought when I joined. Hence my higher target. However, now I find myself desperately wanting to see if I can come in £1000 under my target! maybe that Nat Trust membership will have to go. May set myself up a tart alert to remind me to review it before the DD goes out

    Genius!

Thanks for mentioning the Tart Alert - what a fab device to assist me with this!

  • Hi all! :hello:

I've been reading this thread quite a bit, and should imagine I'll continue to do so, so I thought it only polite to pop in and introduce myself! I won't be able to join the challenge but I set myself a version of it at the beginning of the academic year: to live solely off my student loan and allowance from my lovely parents, which comes to £5267.95 for the year. After rent and the other essential things I need to pay the university I have £2753.95 left to play with. Obviously I get free food and accommodation during the holidays, but that figure also has to cover travel to work, hobbies and so on, which can get expensive - not to mention the extra travel costs of an LDR!

Any 'extra' money from holiday work, pigsback, cashback sites, birthday and Christmas presents... etc will go into a separate savings account in order to fund 2 months' travelling this summer, which I REALLY want to do as I didn't take a gap year, and, well, 3-month summer holidays become a thing of the past when you join the world of work so I want to make the most of them! (I already have some other savings which I don't want to touch until I graduate...)

I've spent £1159.46 so far  BUT the first term is loads more expensive because of the textbooks, society memberships etc, AND I've bought all this year's gifts in the sales with that money :D as well as paid for lots of train tickets to work, so it's looking pretty do-able for the next couple of terms and summer. With any luck I'll have some left for extra spending money!

Sorry for the essay! Just to let you know that I'll be looking in and considering myself an honorary challenger :p Good luck everyone! xxx

I'll be right back with an update on your number and set your target at £3920 to reflect the extra day in 2008

Really sorry about that and I'm really sorry to see Mumzy leave! Oh, Mumzy... I'll visit you often in the sealed pot challenge, smoking quitters and grocery challenge and feel free to pop in here anytime :)

Well, that has changed things a little, so, would you mind slipping in at number 2 so we don't have a gap? Thank you in advance and I've already updated post one to reflect the changes :)

    Thanks for the number :)

Please could you alter my starting figure to £3,800? I'd love it to be £3,900 but sadly it can't be!!

Updated :D Me confuddled by all the posts, can't wait for this all to kick off and then we can compare notes and I'll be able to let you into a couple of little secrets about how to 'beat the blues' of this challenge when things look particularly tough  :D:D

nykmedia, Thank you for letting me join, as I have always had a tight budget and after so many generous gifts this Christmas, i feel as if I need or want anything!

Put me down for the least amount that is up !! I think its 3500, but it if its less I shall go for the challenge.

£3500 it is - thanks for the update and apologies for being late in replying - I kind of got lost in the forums tonight :D

Hehe, well, I was tempted to, but wasn't sure if you'd have me since (a) I've got 3 months' headway on it and (b) my target includes lots of stuff which is supposed to be excluded, such as the socialising, hobbies, essential work-related travel, etc. But then I suppose I'm not paying for gas, electricity, landline and so on, so maybe it balances out! If you think I'm still working within the spirit of the challenge then I'd love a number - it would force me to report back here on how I'm doing and keep me on the straight and narrow! Thanks for the suggestion xxx
