I haven't had the chance to check here today but have now managed to catch up - I think!
Bails - my tomato seeds were in their little makeshift propogator in a cupboard until they sprouted. I think it's something to do with getting the roots stronger but am not a gardener. They grew, that's the main thing. :T
Everyone has been so busy with posts, I don't know where to start. I think Marky has surprised me the most as I have been guilty of harbouring preconceived ideas about accountants (sorry) and am amazed that there are so many professionals on this thread. Now I don't feel quite so bad about wanting to avoid complete 'skintness', if that's a word, as I'm rubbing virtual shoulders with so many smart people these days!
Today was a spend day, the second one this month, as the direct debit went out for the telephone bill - £59.72 for the quarter - not horrendous but could do better. My next spend day is planned for Friday 7th, as my 'stooze card' DD comes out then. I'll try to remember to top up my mobile on that day and top up the milk supplies and then (Bails, you'll be proud of this) I am going to attempt the longest number of no spend days possible.
Will be back here soon to catch up properly - I'm just trying to sort out my spending diary to stop business spends from becoming mixed up with personal ones. Will explain later. :rotfl:I reserve the right not to spend.
The less I spend, the more I can afford.
Frugal living challenge - living on little in 2025 while frugalling towards retirement.0 -
RedDragon I love the idea of gathering sticks for the fire - so frugal and yet so satisfying. But my one close friend who had a real fire - in Wales too as it happens - hated the faff of cleaning it out all the time. It was very cosy to sit in front of on a cold winter's night, though.
Incidentally, I couldn't believe, driving through the South Wales valleys in winter, how smoggy it was due to everyone having coal fires. It was like a film of London in the 1950s. It shows how much cleaner it has become everywhere else due to clean air legislation and the prevalence of central heating.
Apparently there were a few flakes of snow at lunchtime - but I missed them. It's getting colder now so maybe in the night we'll get some.
I love to see daffodils poking through the snow. We've already got the daffodils at work, so roll on the snow.0 -

I watched 'Mummy Don't Drink' earlier, and it struck me that (although I haven't drunk much since I had DS anyway), I have still cut down as a side effect of moneysaving. I used to supermarket-shop each week, and always got a bottle of wine. Now we shop monthly and skip the alcohol aisle. So we only drink what we get for presents (which is only an occasional bottle). One of the women on the programme was spending over £1000 a year on wine. She had never worked out the cost. Easily done, I'd've thought.Any stories to share, anyone? Anyone not including alcohol in their target? Not that I am suggesting bad things about anyone; just interested in hearing about frugal side-effects..:heartsmil When you find people who not only tolerate your quirks but celebrate them with glad cries of "Me too!" be sure to cherish them. Because these weirdos are your true family.0

I ahve just bought a bottle of wine and added it into my 4k as its a luxury to me.Sealed Pot dec 08 - dec 09 so far £27.67, Live off £4k Spent £330.20 GC £1,200 for 2009 Spent £50.78 PaD so far £650.07Debts: L/woods £154.00 C/One PAID O/D £649.90 Next £299.95 O/D PAID Gas £72.60 Electric £155.73 Mum £640.00 Orange £490.320

I bought a bottle of Martini last week, and the amount I have had so far, is still less than what was in one glass of wine, and that has done me for two separate occasions so far. what wine I do have in, is what I have bought for my Christmas baskets cause I don't drink it.
What I have done is promised my son that I will mark down on the bottle at the end of any evening when I have some. He is very sensitive over alcohol as his step-mum has/had a problem (not heard much lately so think she has cut back a bit). My children unfortunately now equate alcohol and arguments as being hand in hand.19th March 2007 LBM£5,969.63 1st January 2018 £5960.18, 1st January 2019 £11,032.0018th August 2023 £12,435.00, Student Loan £22244.00 From 2009-12Challenges: To learn to stop spending..0 -
Hi Mumzy
I'm over the other side of wigan, but come over to Chorley sometimes as used to live nearer and shop in that area.
I work Mon to Fri but any Saturday you want a trip to morrissons or market etc I am usually free, not a problem to give you a lift with the shopping.
When do you budget for your big shop?
As long as you have the car seats for the kids it won't be a problem taking them.0
