Hi everyone, I had lots to reply to but seem to have forgotten the lot now!
I spoke to OH and he has agreed we still have far too much waste coming into the house and we're both going to work on reducing it. I had suggested making a small greenhouse by 'rescuing' bottles from our neighbours (we don't use any) - he laughed it off originally but I'll try again and he'll probably agreeWe are also looking at making our own energy - OH is currently making a heat store (for an environmentally-friendly greenhouse heater, but can be adapted) for his MEng project, so we're going to do our best to keep it at the end, but probably won't be allowed. He is managing to get quite a few free samples of the technical materials needed, so I've suggested we could use some of this to make our own if there's some left over. He worked for a wind turbine consultancy too so we'd like to build one of these at some point. You can get grants for up to £2500 for introducing things like this and solar panels etc, as well as the wood burners Nyk mentioned (your house has to meet certain basic energy-saving criteria first, like having energy-saving lightbulbs in all main rooms). Although we'll be here for a while, our plan/hope is to properly convert our next house/derelict barn or cottage so that we are self-sufficient energy-wise too.
Haven't added up my spends yet so will go do that now. Glad the first day went well Janey, sorry I can't remember what else I wanted to say to peeps.
ps we're on page 200! Now whos' going to make Post 4000?

Sounds like you had a lovely time! lol, I have found when talking to ppl about my summer plans they tend to know the country as burma and 'myanmar' gets blank faces so I have trained myself to use the 'old' name instead; but I didn't know that about the pronunciation of the river kwai, will have to be careful! :silenced: When we have firmed up what we want to do I might well PM you nearer the time - thanks very much for the offer of helpLive on £4000 a Year Challenge member

Hi elantan,
It was like this-

Andromache, we were in Bangkok recently and whilst there bought a second hand lonely planet guide to Cambodia (easily bought very cheaply on the Koh Sarn rd....the backpackers road). We went to an internet cafe and booked cheap flights to Phnom Phen and it was great. We then went by boat up to Siem Reap to see Angkor Watt...it's great and easy to travel around.
PLASTIC...
Give the plastic back at the checkout. I have very little rubbish as I grow my own food but it drives me up the wall when I can't get rid of the packaging. I recycle everything I can but my local council don't yet recycle plastic.
Bottle Greenhouse...a man on our allotments had a bottle made large gteenhouse for years. Sadly he died last year but used to grow tomatoes in it quite successfully. He also used plastic bottles to mark out his veggie beds. He used lond ,bendy plastic rods and put a hole in the base of the bottle and fed the rod through. It was a bit of a problem in high winds as he didn't secure them all that well and some inevitably blew away. But he was getting on a bit so it was only to be expected...we called him " Bottle Joe". It does work though.Wombling £457.410 -
