There's a satisfaction in being frugal but not mean. I bet it's a greater satisfaction than the ring of the till as the credit card goes through it. This thread is an inspiration to those of us who are trying to live within our means. Our means and living conditions are as varied as the posters on here so if the £4000 figure doesn't work for you it doesn't matter, it's the spirit of the project that counts.

Thanks for that Keren, I've popped over and asked a couple of questions too. I hope they get a response, as I'm dying to know how much "Freeganism" costs. I don't fancy the travelling lifestyle, as I'd prefer to eat fresh, homegrown produce and I've become quite reliant on my freezer and washing machine. I was going to ask about washing/drying clothes but then decided they could string a rope between 2 campervans and hang the washing there :) Umm... I also added a note requesting they 'click to give' on www.thehungersite.com :D

My point was that applying this £4000 number to a working paying for all him/herself person withj no storage of 200 knickers from the past as they were not wasted money on in a previous year will result in harm to their mental and physical health.

Right, I am scared. Very scared. I have nowhere near 200 pairs of knickers in my knicker stash.

And justme has a point, drastic long-term cuts to the humble knicker budget just isnt sustainable.

At some point, the knickers will wear out....elastic waistbands will snap....they will go all ropey and grey. Some will become holey.

Our mental and physical health will indeed crumble before our very eyes.

But alas, despite the warnings, something in my frugal heart just will not allow me to rush out and spend that £70 on a years supply of spanking new knickers (please forgive the pun, I know this is serious business, but I couldnt help myself)...and I know I am not alone in thinking this

'WHAT IS TO BE DONE!' I hear you cry 'WE ARE SURELY DOOMED!!!'

fear not, my frugal friends, salvation is at hand....

    knicker stoozing
    • At the start of each month, put your knicker allowance - £5.83 (£70/12) into a high interest savings account
    • During the month, take care not to wear out your knickers (handwashing? Careful dressing so as not to stretch the elastic? no ripping off of knickers in a fit of passion? monthly KFD (knicker-free day) targets?)
    • If you need to replace your knickers, then you can withdraw money from your knicker account. Knicker martyrs are not to be encouraged - knickers are a serious business, and we have all heard about the risks to our physiical and mental health.
    • At the end of the year you should have generated some knicker-interest due to your careful handling of knickers during the year. Well done.
    • Subtract what you will need for your 2009 knicker budget, and donate your knicker profit to 'knickers4nuns'
Result - everyone has a good supply of knickers, maintains their mental and physical health, and dear old knickerless nun in india will be knickerless no more

    Who is with me?

UPDATE - due to a greater variance in the cost of bras, your bra budget and your knicker budget should be kept seperarate when completing the GKSC (great knicker stoozing challenge) 2008
