The supermarket waste demonstrated was ridiculous. If it HAS to be binned, for reasons of politics and economics, then it should not be simply 'binned'. The supermarkets responsible should be made dispose of it properly, possibly via charitable outlets. If it's notpast its 'use by' then why not use it somewhere like the prisons? That would save the taxpayers a small fortune. And all those split outer packets (like the Maltesers) could be donated. I know it states on the inner packs that they cannot be sold individually, but if I went in a supermarket and there was a shelf of split packs on offer in exchange for donations...

Has anyone actually contacted any shops about this? I know that I used to ask my local greengrocer to keep me all the excess fruit & veg when I kept my extended pet collection. One person I knew hardly ever bought feed for his livestock (he was a smallholder), he simply went around the shops in his van at closing time or first thing in the morning collecting their surplus fruit, veg, bread, rolls and milk. But perhaps this has been banned since back then?

PS: Postman's just been with my 4 free energy saving lightbulbs! :j

PPS: Train travels - have you all got your Bite cards? At least if you slip up in the frugal stakes then you'll get 10% off the cuppa and food if you buy at the station. :D

PPPS: Cobblers - I have had boots and shoes reheeled often in the past, local cobbler was about £4 for small heels. Will let you know next week when I hand in my 'good' boots :)

nyk, I rememeber when I used to work at a supermarket, and a lady came on a sunday to collect lots of waste fruit and veg to feed her goats, she'd always go away with a whole trolley full of free stuff! madness.

  • Nyk, I once acquired a large box of veg that lasted me over a week and all for the princely sum of 50p but the Co-Op aren't allowed to do that any more. It HAS to go into the bins :( Silly, isn't it? I agree with the saving the taxpayer ideas, wish the politicians would get on this particular wagon! I suppose there would be large protests saying you can't feed prisoners substandard food .... the PC police would be out in force, despite the fact that many of us out here in freedomland are forced to do this to make ends meet, what a topsyturvy place we live in.

I think the collections for animals has been stopped since 2001 and the Foot and Mouth pandemic. By the way, if you look at a map of the outbreaks there is apparently a trail all around the motorways and branching off - I wonder how that works?

  • Just popped to Asda and the reduced section was heaving, absolutely heaving. Bread, cakes, veg, fruit, pies, yoghurts, ready meals, cooked meats.......I stood there and thought - none of this had better be bloody binned!!! I did get a few lovely bargains though. ;)

DG, like you, I mapped the outbreaks during FMD and had some contact with the Ministry at the time (work related). I won't print here what I think of what went on at that time.

Keren - if it's not sold then it'll get binned. I think the only way around it is for us to find more people on challenges similar to this :)

i heard there was a young lad in america that has managed to bring to the attention of the law makers this problem and a bill is in the process of being passed so that the homeless etc can have the waste food and the company (asda etc) can not then be sued at a later date ...that was the reason it got stopped in the u.s...maybe we need that here

You see, some people could live with £400 a year - take as example a pensioner who has paid his mortgage and who has grown up son living with her and paying all the bills and doing shopping and buying all the goods. Or a nun in a convent in India - she'd be OK at £4.

......how long do you use your towels for?

hang on a minute....now correct me if im wrong, but does that mean that this nun is in fact (gasp) a knickerless nun???

    well i never

ps oh no, looks like im gonna be awake all night again, i have also neglected to budget for towels wearing down... crickey i think id better just pull out right now...;)

    1) I've just filled a skip with all the stuff from ripping out my old kitchen - not only did I get the smallest and cheapest skip possible :T(only a few weeks ago I'd have got a bigger one as it would be much easier to fill), I've had to strenuously saw up some bits of cupboard to make them fit in, aiding my frugal fitness challenge at the same time. :j
I've also done frugal brain gym  as it was quite an art getting everything in, sort of jigsaw puzzle, but it's all done.

    2) Yesterday resealed shower as it had been leaking (only revealed when enormous kitchen cupboard removed:eek: ). Not to use it for 48 hours, so having a shower at a friend's house which I'm keeping an eye on as they're on holiday.
