Back on MSE again! to take control of my finances and not let it control me. :T May grocery challenge £41.96/140

we now seem to have paid £154.59 for approx. 6 months gas . Does this seem like a lot to you??

    Hi Bails
That seems quite cheap to me. I pay £67 per month for gas and electric together, I think I'm a little bit in credit (bill due next week). We're in and end of terrace house, with double glazing and good loft insulation, gas central heating and gas hob but electric oven.

    Hi NYK,

Mt grocery challenge is £200, which I will make for the end of Jan, but with 2 adults and 1 teenager, I could cut this down I guess.... Need to re-think for Feb...

Thanks for the tortilla recipie - is this fried in a pan or baked? Never tried making them before just got used to paying a couple of quid for 8!!
Can you use any other fat rather than lard?

    InTheRed x

    Hello again :)
I roll out the flour tortillas and then just chuck them in a dry frying pan for about a minute each side. I flour them a little to make sure they are really dry. I'm guessing that any sort of fat or oil would be OK, I use lard because it's so cheap :D (And I like making the wild birds some treats now and again - lard and broth mix with some peanuts and they love it stuffed inside the half coconut shell that we've had for years.)
I reserve the right not to spend.
The less I spend, the more I can afford.

  • Hi all
£20 petrol today & £50 at Mr T's, we have friends visiting tomorrow but hopefully won't work out too expensive, on the up side I've sold 7 books on Amazon, one of them for £20, so I've made nearly £40 this week.

:mad:Grr, I've got myself totally wound up and just need to vent! While I was paying in some cheques at the bank today, I tried to put an OD on one of my new(ish) joint accounts - I was told no problem, up to £450 is fine. I asked for £50, as I simply want it in case anything unexpected were to come out. After a long wait I was then told I couldn't have an OD because I am unemployed. I accepted this at the time but actually it upset me quite a lot: I have an excellent credit history and over 3 grand of OD facility on my other accounts with the same bank (which I have never used). All I was trying to do was be a sensible customer and safeguard against the unexpected and now I feel like a second-class citizen because I am unable to work. By the time I got home I was determined to sort it out but I now can't get through to the bank on the phone! I know I'm probably being silly as I don't want to use the OD anyway, but I wanted the peace of mind, you know?
Sorry :o back once I've caught up.

bails I know it's hard but please don't take it too personally. Jobsworths I know but they probably have to follow certain 'scripts' and, unfortunately ,they won't have made any allowance for your specific credit history and situation. EDIT If you do get through on the phone ask to speak to an underwriter or a manager.

Back now, sorry about before; I hate banks! I'm with the one that's in the title of the back charges song
Those candles do look lovely, I will check it out properly later, thanks Whitewing.

I just remembered Nyk mentioned about my elec - we've paid £22.71 for that over the same time period, doesn't seem much to me?
How great that you can get your gym membership for free and earn a bit of cash Graciesgran! Seems like you've got a real plan worked out there, well done!

Erm....:o....I've spent quite a bit this afternoon; shh, don't tell the Boss! ;) Here's my confession: leg wax £35 , hot stone massage for my mum £45 (I have made her a present but she's my mum, you know, and you're only 60 once and well, I love her and want to spoil her), yoghurt raisins to cheer up my OH and a small bag of choc raisins cos I was so upset by the bank. Doh! I'm going to play catchup with my mum's pressie though and earn that back by selling some of my stuff. Oh and I did get £15 back today for an unwanted Christmas present so I can put that towards it for a start! :T

Anyway, on the plus side, we were going to succumb and have a takeaway tonight as we're both a bit fed up but I've just decided to make fajitas instead as we both love them; thanks for the reminder Nyk! And that's one of the many reasons I love this thread - just when you think you're really going to blow it, you can come on here, be inspired and give yourself enough time to talk yourself out of it! :D Thankyou :iloveyou:

Scottish meet for frugalites? Hmm... could be fun after the challenge ends and I think by Scottish it means location wise. One third of my household is English, so does that mean we can attend the south east of England meeting too? Class it as a long haul holiday? :rotfl:

I'm in the south east, can I come if there is a meeting please, I can't join yet for lots of reasons, but plan do a 9 month version after end march

Thanks very much for the advice Ellidee, I will certainly do that. I'm hoping that they'll let me shift some of my OD from one of the other accounts onto this new one, so they're all covered.
I definitely, definitely want to come to the end of year celebrations in Scotland! We can have them in Nyk's new dream house :D marquee on the land, swimming in the ponds, donkey rides...:rotfl:
