There are two important caveats about the inflation rate. The first is that the rate you hear about on the news is a government figure and, I have absolutely no doubt, massaged to suit their purposes. The second is that even if it were accurate (which it isn't) it is only an average, so some prices will have gone up by more than that nominal sum and some by less.

The Governments recommended measure of inflation is now CPIH, thirty years ago it used to be RPI inflation.
The figures for Dec 2022, the most recent, put CPIH at 9.2% and RPI inflation at 13.4%
I guess back in the nineties the mathematicians were poor!
I agree, I think inflation is higher than the Governments figures suggest.
Yes, I think it's pretty obvious (certainly to anyone without a political agenda) that food prices are soaring by well over the Government's claimed inflation rate and that the way the rate is calculated, not to mention the the choice of method used,  is designed to conceal more than it reveals.

Dragging this back on thread, I'm close to giving up on Morrisons, which I've previously used for things I can't get in Aldi. After years apparently spent chasing Waitrose's 'quality' image, Sainsbury's seems to have come to its senses and is starting to offer better value. .
  • Tesco’s frozen pasty slices 2 pack have gone from £1 to £1.45. Stopped buying those.
Some branded items are so ridiculously expensive now that I’ve stopped buying the item altogether if there’s not a cheaper option available.  Big challenge for the brands that have massively upped their prices is that when all this blows over (however long that may take) & people aren’t so strapped for cash they’ll have gotten used to the cheaper alternatives & likely won’t switch back up again when prices go down or wages go up etc.

Just done an online shop at ASDA and things I bought last week have rocketed. Lloyd Grossman sauces, last week £1.25 (on offer from £2) are now £3. Same with Sharwood sauces. Ambrosia custard up to £1.95 from last weeks £1.40. Checked all the other supermarkets and all seem the same.

    Scandalous really.

A good example of that is Gressingham crispy duck and pancakes which has not only shot up in price since Christmas but has been switched from Duck raised in the UK to duck raised in Thailand. In the past I was willing to pay a bit extra to buy a British product which was, I felt, superior to the supermarket own brand equivalents and less open to animal welfare doubts. Now the branded version is the same as the own brand and the price has been increased by over £2 a pack in some cases, I'm afraid Gressingham has lost a customer.

I suspect your going to be right as they need top stop making them seem affordable. i was reading on the tobacconomics website that due to wage increases and non-tobacco inflation, cigarettes are cheaper in the tax year 2022-2023 compared to 2020-2021

I was listening to BBC radio 4 today and they discussed food prices post Brexit and they were suggesting Brexit has been causing food prices to increase year on year for the past 3 years.

They would wouldn't they? Seems Brexit has also affected food prices in the USA as well, very odd ;)

Funny you should mention that! Just two days ago I saw graphs of the inflation rate in Germany, the USA and the UK overlaid. They all showed pretty similar inflation. Strong stuff that Brexit! The BBC 'at it again' no doubt.

I agree that Morrisons seem to have gone up a lot and rarely shop there now whereas it was my favourite.  I tend to shop around as I am lucky enough to have the time.  Co-op have some really good offers at times.  I also got really nice free range chicken at Sainsbury's a couple of weeks ago in their yellow sticker stuff.  Reduced by about 80%.
