Morrisons Doubling Prices on some items - when inflation is 10%

I have been looking back at some old receipts from this time in 2020 for Morrisons and I can accept that some items have to have increased prices with the current rate of inflation. But there are several items that have pretty much doubled in price. This is one example. In October 2020 the fish was £2.79 now it's £5.25. A tin of veg soup was 38p, now it's 85p. This is crazy ! Must be something to do with the new American owners - Morrisons have dropped to 4th in the supermarked league table.

Noticed the same in Sainsburys. On some items like you say, the inflation has been massive. Many items that were £1, are now £1.25. Some products they are doing the shrinkflation trick on, or some are making a bigger pack, which really isn't that much bigger and charging much more than the old size. For example Tunnocks teacakes, you get just 2 more but pay a much higher price than for the 8 pack. They thought people wouldn't notice - ha well I did!

There are two important caveats about the inflation rate. The first is that the rate you hear about on the news is a government figure and, I have absolutely no doubt, massaged to suit their purposes. The second is that even if it were accurate (which it isn't) it is only an average, so some prices will have gone up by more than that nominal sum and some by less.
That aside, are some companies taking advantage of the current inflationary climate? I've no doubt that they are and by no means only supermarkets.2 -
We online tesco and physically shop at Morrisons/Icelands and M&S
Everyhting is going up often by around 20%.
The fish iat Morriosn was cheap hence the massive increase and then I guess next week it will be in-line with Tesco etc at about 4 quid and it will be a 'special price' from the 5.25.
Food inflation is a lot higher all round and the rpi inflation we get incs fules ie gas/electric/petro/mortgage payments etc etc but food is sky rocketing.0 -
I went to Tesco to shop yesterday; I looked at some pasta whose pack size had shrunk.I skipped buying it there and went to Aldi instead.Their tins of sweets are shrinking too.0

Price of fish and chips to rise to over £10 for first time (yahoo.com)
Article is from Feb of this year, but in it the national federation of fish fryers quoting price of cod up 75% in the 6 month period since October. So 100% in two years may be on the low side if anything.3 -
I mentioned this elsewhere. Flora spreads were generally available at £1 for 500g and £2 for 1Kg, now the double whammy "cheap price" of £1.75 for 450g and £3.50 for 1Kg.

Coming from a retail background - and having an understanding of the laws around pricing - you may very well find that it's not the 'permanent' price. Retailers have to sell something for a certain number of days before they can claim that it WAS this much - and is NOW only this much! (Common on Black Friday deals as well). If you keep an eye on the price over the next week or so - you might find it goes onto a miraculously humongous discount - back to where the price was to start with.1

There are examples of products that haven't changed price much, though - just a few off the top of my head:-
- Aldi Salad Bag (Mixed Leaves) - 57p before, went up a bit, and now back at 57p.
- Aldi/Lidl Small Seeded Loaf - was 65p, now 69p
- Tesco "Growers Harvest" Soya Milk - 55p
- Aldi Essentials Chocolate - 33p
So, as above, the average inflation rate will include some products that haven't gone up much, and others that have gone up more. Which is what we'd expect as the impact on prices doesn't affect all supply lines equally.1
