There are companies that can bind the edges of an offcut of carpet.  I have one as a doormat.
I had a couple of bigger bits as rugs, but they crease too easily, and once the backing fabric is creased it can't be un-creased.
The fitters/shops i've used have offered this, immediately, when there will be a decent sized piece leftover.
  • It's one of the things I'm gonna ask them about when I go in later. It's a brilliant idea, I hope they do it/can recommend someone.
I removed the shell from my racing snail, but now it's more sluggish than ever.

Are you sure the carpet was GLUED down? That would rarely be done.

Not sure about the forming of the carpet around the tread nosings - that 'would' need gluing or stapling or similar, and ours certainly wasn't done that way.

Well done for disposing of the large bits. Try it with the gripper rods too - should be fun...

    kidding
  • No I'm not sure it was glued down, just my (ignorant - add it to the list!) assumption.

There was lots of spraying going on, I thought it was some sort of adhesive because what else could it be?

Definitely chat to them about those stairs. I'd want the wrapped around the nosings too.

We had lots of off cuts (big bits) of carpet (twice - as they had to redo the whole house after complaint) and vinyl from when we had that done.

I sold the big bits on social media for £10 for the biggest roll and gave the smaller size cupboard bits away. Some really happy people came and collected it for their various rooms/cupboards.

Reminds me I have some vinyl to go this weekend that I found in the cupboard :)

I would imagine it's low-tack for keeping the underlay in place, but I don't know. Or did they glue the carpet to the stairs instead of using two sets of gripper rods where the treads meet the risers?
  • I don't know if they glued the carpet to the stairs, there aren't any grippers tho. It's one piece from the bottom of the stairs right up and along the landing. There are grippers where it meets the bedroom doors.

I wish I'd watched them as they were working, then I could give better answers.

I mean hidden grippers under the carpet, just as you have around the perimeter of fitted floor carpet.

The usual method is to fit two rods where the riser meets the tread, and spaced - ooh - 15mmish apart. The carpet bends at right angles there, and is forced in to the corner between the two grippers using a bolster.

Anyhoo, that stuff doesn't matter. All that matters is that they seemingly did a good job, marred by poor communication and/or customer relations. They need a chance to explain their reasoning, and for you to explain your surprise and disappointment.

The carpet fitter may have glued gripper strips rather than nailing, but I wouldn't expect them to glue the carpet.  They may also have glued the underlay on the stairs although when ours has been done they have stapled it.

I remember my father making dolls house carpets for me, after we had new carpets fitted.

The problem is that the pile on the carpet is too deep for the height of the rooms and the furniture. The carpet needed excessive trimming and even then the backing was too deep. The pile of the carpet reached the seats of the chairs, the dolls had to "walk" in knee deep carpet and the stairs became a safety hazard! I remember being a really upset little kid.
