Mess left by carpet fitters. Advice please?

Options
I'm not sure if this is in the right section but I'd appreciate any advice on a couple of points before I do anything please.

Just had new carpets fitted in the hall, up the stairs, and in the back bedroom.  I've paid the 3 guys and they've gone. There's a lot of off-cuts and extra bits of carpet and underlay, the old grippers, and so many tufty fluffy bits everywhere....

A couple of questions if I may (and I'm sure this is basic stuff but I've never had new carpets before so I don't know, hence asking here)

1) Is it standard to come in and lay the carpet and leave? I'm happy with the work they've done, just thought they would remove all the mess afterwards.
2) Please don't laugh cos I'm serious - can I safely hoover up the bits? It won't kill my Henry will it? There's just such a lot of it, maybe I should sweep up first?

Thanks in advance.

They prefer to leave stuff as they would have to pay to dump it, but they would probably have taken the rubbish if you had asked.

Henry won't mind sucking the little bits up, the rest goes in the wheelie big/black sacks/whatever you have, maybe over a few weeks.
Tall, dark & handsome. Well two out of three ain't bad.
  • Thank you EssexExile. I was almost too embarrassed to ask! We always just got (more and more) rugs from the sale room, new carpets is a first for me.

I probably should have asked if they'd take the remaining nonsense away but didn't think to.

More and more 'trades' want to leave their rubbish behind for the reason EssexExile mentions.  Thankfully, when I was having a lot of work done in the garden I noticed that the quote stated that rubbish disposal would be my responsibility.  I got that changed and paid the extra for them to take it away.  I have no idea how I would have disposed of it all myself, other then getting in a skip.

Bit rude of them I think, most tradespeople take pride in their work and would show the rooms done in the best way, which would be debris free.

However the offcuts can be put to good use by cutting into coaster size pieces and placed under bed and furniture legs to stop those indentations you can get. At least until you are sure that is place you want furniture to stay.
  • Thank you guys, I don't feel so ignorant now. It never even occurred to me that I'd have to request they take the rubbish away, I just presumed they would leave it in a good-to-go state... my mistake.

Some of the off-cuts they've left are big enough to carpet a small room, so if anyone's lacking just let me know cos I've plenty here!

When we had our carpets fitted the off cuts were used to floor the walk in wardrobes.  Does your child or any children friends have a dolls house they want carpeted?  I wish I had kept off cuts to put under feet in the office as after 16 years the carpets are nearly through to the bare web where we sit.

Some of the off-cuts they've left are big enough to carpet a small room
If you're so inclined, you can cut any decent-sized offcuts to a size that suits and get the edges "bound".  This'll give you a mat to put by the front door or whatever, to protect the carpet from muddy shoes etc.
Most carpet shops will offer a binding service, or if you have any local curtain-makers or anything like that, they'll often be able to do it as well.
Just a thought, if you fancy some matching door-mats for not much money.  I believe you can even buy the binding tape yourself if you fancy having a bash at DIY-ing it.

  • Some pics of what they’ve left. Bedroom, hall, living room, kitchen.

  • I love the doll’s house and binding ideas, thanks both 😊 Actually the carpet that’s in the built-in wardrobes is pure lovely but I couldn’t find it anywhere or I’d have had acres of it.

I’ve probably enough to cover the clumpy echoey laminate in the living room…

Pretty much every job I've had quoted comes with the option of paying extra for rubbish removal or not. Always check if this is mentioned on the quote. As stated, it costs them more money to take away. I was told it would be £130 for me to get my carpet and underlay taken away and they were happy to do so but obviously when the fitting only cost £90 I told them I'd do it myself!

They did hoover the room for me though.

As for scraps, I'm not someone who likes to hold onto lots of "just in case" bits so I saved just one rolled piece in case a repair is needed in the future and got rid of the rest.
