Hmmm….under those plans we’d have a very chilly Monday and Tuesday with short charged heating overnight on both Sunday and Monday. Not exactly surprised to see that this is massively loaded towards GSH’d homes, but there you go!
Most GSH will not work in a power cut … boiler firing, pumps and valves all need power.
Yes, I’m aware of this. With GSH though once the outage is over (and indeed if it was overnight would your heating even be on? I don’t think I know anyone with GSH that runs it 24/7 these days!) then you fire everything back up again and hey presto, house backup to temperature reasonably soon thereafter. With storage heating, if the required input has not been there - for example if three hours of the charging time is during an outage - and even more particularly if that has happened on two consecutive nights, then there IS no way of bringing the house back up to temperature the following day, the heat just isn’t there to release.

You're losing three hours a night, so will have four to charge? I guess you can turn the charge rate up to MAX to compensate, if you wouldn't have done so otherwise?
It will be interesting to find out how your Quantum copes with this. If the misisng hours are at the start of your E7 period, will it catch up when the power comes back on?

If I go to the site their permissions are full of "Legitimate interests" to disable - who are they to define legitimate interests about my information?
  • Interestingly though, I have the box where the load block should be, but on my bill it is blank. I also know that I am on the same circuit as the local hospital which is very close, so I am wondering if that means I am on a line that should in theory never be turned off, or if for some reason EDF and British Gas before them never chose to populate the field that should show in that box.
You could be - it certainly used to be set up to switch complete circuits at the substation only, and the hospital would qualify as a protected site.

All depends if the hospital has a standby generator or not.  If it does, the circuit can still be disconnected.

And if it doesn't, the circuit is only protected from being turned off if it doesn't supply enough 'non-essential' load to affect the overall performance of the load reduction (i.e. if there is a lot of 'other stuff' on the same circuit as the hospital, it can still be turned off).

on the level 1 rota out of the 18 letter code list , 2 of the  letter codes  J and T ,only get two planned three hour blackouts a week .

four of the letter codes are down for   double that with four x three hour blackouts per week..They are D ,H,P and S .
The other 12 all get 3 x three hour blackouts a week .

Levels 2 and 3 have increased 3 hour slots with level 2 getting up to 6 slots a week . Level  3 getting either eight or nine x 3 hour blackouts a week . The times are all published in the Daily Mail report .

Good to know the exact times and days so we can all plan ahead.

According to Octopus I ve dropped on the S letter code

Much less likely to require blackouts in the overnight blocks though as usage is low in those periods anyway. And there's always the option to run the storage heater at daytime rates if you really need it. Those with Gas don't have that option.

I understand the grid (we're J), however, I thought that the blackouts (if they happen) would be for just the peak evening periods, rather than spread out throughout the day.  eg 5pm to 8pm

Each letter having an evening blackout on a certain day(s).

    Have I misinterpreted?
How's it going, AKA, Nutwatch? - 12 month spends to date = 2.60% of current retirement "pot" (as at end May 2025)

i think they planned out the hole thing because theres a good chance people will move the peak. sparky i think said that they will look at the demand the day before to see how it matches the supply and that doesn't mean all of the blocks will have a cut in a day so it might only be the peak evening periods (or we might have none at all)

It's amazing how those with a can-do attitude and willingness to 'pitch in and work' get all the luck, isn't it?
