  • We’ve a meter and a hot tub we empty a couple of times a year plus a DS who can empty the tank on a shower, washer / dishwasher on  most days and we still only pay £22 a month
Wow, that is cheap. I did the question thing on ST website and they say we wouldn't be any better off with one, so I don't know. Maybe ST are just notoriously expensive compared to some water companies.

My dad is with ST and I have just arranged a meter for him. despite it saying that as a low user (he works away all week) it would only save him £10 a year - I don't think this is the case, I truly believe he will pay far less than he does now. However, irrespective of how large or small the savings, a saving is a saving and surely he would be better off paying for what he actually uses. He currently pays far more than me, and our house is bigger and we are here every day!

  • Just made a £60 OP on the mortgage, only because stupid mortgage company are now taking less money a month, as they have done some sums and think that as we have been overpaying, they will do us a favour and lower the payments, so that we still finish the plan on the right date!  No, don't think so, the idea is to get it paid off earlier.  So there will be more OPs on Monday when I get my pension and the new budget period starts and I can update everything.
Not much more to write today, as having some family issues, and not really been on the ball as far as surveys, money saving etc is concerned.  Hopefully update on Monday if not before.
Hope everyone else is doing ok

  • I use to pay £79 a month for water when there were three of of so I had a meter put in and it went down to about £25. That was about 9 years ago. It went back up to £49 when DD2 moved back and I'm still waiting to see how much next year will be because I've been on my own for a year on the 8th of March

I moved to Wales recently and Welsh Water are charging me more than double what I paid with ST, so I'm getting a water meter fitted this month. Previously the calculator said I would only save a few pounds so I didn't bother, but it looks like it could be a much more substantial saving now so the added inconvenience of being frugal with water will be worth it.

Hope the family issues are easily and quickly resolved for you.
  • Hope your family issues are sorted soon and without too much hassle. We have had similar recently and I found it hard to get my focus back.

I can't understand why mortgage providers can't either make a quick phone call or send an email/letter asking what you would prefer them to do with your payments... although I guess it's in their best 'interests' to keep the original end date.

Keep at em, they can't stop you making your extra payments :)

It won’t make any difference in the end if you continue to make overpayments 👍

Afternoon diary readers. What a lovely sunny day it has turned out to be, after a very cold morning.
Not been around much for a few days due to family issues, which I won't bore you with, but just to say we sadly lost an extended family member over the weekend, but the main issue is the attitude of another of DH's relatives and how I have now lost any little respect I already had for her and just want to slap her.  Off my soap box now and onto other things.

So what MSE things have been happening.
Yesterday was the start of the new 4 week budget period. All pots have been checked and money shuffled around.
£225 OP made to mortgage, bringing us down to just £18,100 now. I am determined to get rid of this, so we can use the money to pay off the rest of the DMP debts asap.
On that subject, the first payment of one of the F&F settlements went out today, meaning that we are now below £34K with those debts.  Finally starting to see some better movement there.

So far this month, 2 NSD's and may  be one today, but want to see what happenes before declaring

Surveys have been a bit hit & miss as haven't been online as much as I wanted, due to the family issues, but I do have some money to cash out from P/fc later. So all good there

Yesterday I had to go to hospital for a screening that is being trialled in our county for women in my age group. I was asked if I wanted to sign up to the research and they gave me free car parking for doing so...a nice MSE win there
Then I went to the nearest huge Mr T which I hadn't been to for years. They had a nice sale and as I was actually on a mission for a few new bits of clothes, I got some decent savings on new PJs, T shirts and underpants for DH. He was less than pleased with what he called his "boring" purchases. I told him that as he was never going to buy any himself, I had no choice. He just lets them fall to bits and is not bothered in the least what they look like.  Well, I am bothered and his old ones will make good polishing cloths....lol
Next shopping mission is to get some new jeans, which I still haven't been able to get yet. Soon I won't be able to go out the door as will have nothing to wear on my bottom half...lol Leggings are looking tatty now and jeans very baggy.  Hoping to try Mr S tomorrow and if nothing there, will have to sort another day when I can go to the big M&S, N*xt, & Pr*m*rk at the nearby retail park...which I hate with a passion. Although I might also try M*t*l*n which is near the big Mr T and I never got round to trying anything in there yesterday.

So that's about it for now,. Waiting on DD bringing the 2 youngest GS's round for an hour and then dinner tonight is fish from the freezer.
    Have a good evening everyone.

I feel your pain on both big retail park style shopping AND OH's who won't replace their clothes when needed - MrEH is another one who as long as stuff fits and is comfortable he doesn't care when it's past the stage of looking respectable! Ironically he wears a suit for work and always looks super-smart - maybe he's quietly rebelling in his own time, come to think of it!

Can't really comment on water meter cheapness for certain yet although when we moved in to the house they set us at £34 a month, and when reviewing on our first bill they re-se that to £20 a month and sent us a refund of what we had overpaid. I suspect we will go up a bit from there allowing for garden use although we do have a water butt for rain from the office and shed roof, and I will make sure that the run-off from the kitchen sink hot water goes into a watering can in the warmer weather as well. At the flat we had an assessed bill as I wanted a meter fitted and the only place they could find to stick it was behind the dishwasher which was about to become a built in one so I said that wasn't suitable as I wouldn't be able to read it. "Oh that's OK" he said "You won't need to - it will be a smart one" My response was smart or not, I'll still be checking it regularly, which I won't be able to if it's buried behind a dishwasher, will I now! The assessed bill there though (2 bed flat, 2 people) was £36 a month, which clearly goes to show that it is NOT, as it was meant to be, based on an estimate of what we would pay had we been metered!
