But without a very complicated individually tailored "zone" that's allowed outside of everyone's own postcode area there only 2 alternative options, what we have now or you MUST post within your OWN postcode prefix.

I suppose that a version of the latter could be a restriction not exactly by postcode but on the posting locations that can actually be used as determined by Spectos Such that mobile verification is 100% mandatory and you only have access to post boxes & offices that appear on the map in your App ! Perhaps restricted to a 1 or 2 or 5 mile radius of your home address ?

Otherwise it would be a very complicated restriction. Depending upon direction I only need to travel about half a mile and DE21 can become DE1 or DE7. It could also become DE24, but both DE22 and DE23 are at least 3 miles away.

    All but uncontrollable!

It always used to be that you had to post in your own postcode area. So if you lived in DE21 you have to post in DE21.

Any postbox in the 'B' area will be emptied and sorted at Birmingham Mail Centre, even if it is addressed to the house beside the postbox. But then multiple sorting offices have been merged into one mail centre, I had a letter postmarked BS/BA/GL/TA which covers four old sorting offices in a sizeable chunk of the west of England. It would be rather annoying to live at the junction of three of those four and not be allowed to post in postboxes (outside your postal area)

So when spectos talk about a space in your area they are really looking to check on the mail centre (and delivery offices for incoming mail.)

Or are they looking at individual post boxes? Otherwise why do they need so much detail. I actually think it important that the public has confidence that each and every box is collected. I’ve long suspected that the box on my road is often missed. I post spectos mail in my local box and often get queries from Spectos as the item isn’t tracked for 2+ days, whereas the box round the corner never had queries.

    that's what I'd have thought.
its supposed to be in our area, and you only get activated when there is a space in your area. But if you are travelling miles out then you aren't actually there.
ah well I suppose it gives us leverage for if we are away but local!

  • I presume it comes down to how Royal Mail are monitored by Ofcom. It’s unlikely that they are monitored on an AB1, AB2, AB3 etc basis and instead they are likely to be monitored on how they are doing for an entire region as a whole. Therefore, the information for all panelists who are in a particular region is likely to be aggregated and reported for that region as a whole and so it doesn’t really matter where in the region items are posted because as long as they have multiple panelists in a region, it seems unlikely that they will all end up posting in the same post box and so results will be broadly representative of that region.

Obviously I’m guessing but in my mind anyway, it seems to explain why they are only concerned about posting somewhere in AB, B etc, so long as it’s your base location.

What do you understand spectos mean when they say 'a space in your area'? Spectos have never specified which postbox or post office to post any test item AFAIK. The requirement is simply that it must be within your home postcode area (the initial one or two letters) and there are limits on how many panellists in each postcode are active at any one time but I did once have a test letter to post to someone a mile away from me.
