  • Hi guys

    Well....

My annual New Year January indebtment ( a cause for a portion of my debt) reared its head again:

Jan 2022: in major storm all. My guttering blown down and roof damage (I'm corner house) requiring £££ u allowed for repairs

Jan 2021: all fences blown down and garden left exposed and in a dangerous state.

Jan 2020: car with 70k mileage, fsh and serviced and repaired reguallry gearbox and clutch exploded - need new car.

Now 3rd Jan 2022: stuck in 3 hr RTA jam, car starts to smokke bad. Manage to pull over into side of motorwa. Call AA. 4 hours later its pitch black, I'm. Freezing, AA say don't know when can get me. By 23:50 battery dead, no sign of AA (8 hrs). No choice but to drive home. Get home (smoke dashboard lit up, temp off charts etc)  contact AA (still no one) got garage to come out looks like head gasket gone

Tahts worth more than car. Don't know what to do, can't afford new car etc and as working from home geting grief from work.

    Devastated doesn't cover it!!!!

Alos shawbrook loan have sent me a letter, saying its a default notice and if I don't pay they 'may'

    Notift credit agency of default
Take me to court for a ccj

What you reckon write to them now or wait for the official credit default.

Very threatening letter by the way

That’s such bad luck. Is the head gasket worth more than the cost of buying a new car though? I think sometimes repairing a car that you know and have looked after is much more cost affective than buying a replacement older car with no knowledge of its history. There’s always the very real chance that a car is being sold on because it’s costing a lot in repairs.
I don’t know about default letters, but someone more knowledgeable will be bound to turn up soon.

Sorry to hear of your unfortunate experience. Once you've pushed through dealing with this debt, you'll be in a much better place to deal with unexpected finances like this.

Re your car, you could ask for advice on the motoring forum.

Wait for the default, then contact them to say how much you will pay them.

They will put the default on your credit record I'm sure.  But that's OK - all defaults go on it.

They may get a CCJ , debts can result in them? But you'd get to defend it or start paying etc. It's not something that happens with no warning.

  • Shawbrook do send threatening letters.  They won't take you to court though if you are not in a position to pay.  They cannot get blood out of a stone and CCJs take account of affordability.  The car is your biggest problem.  What is the bill to replace head gasket?  The question to ask is will it cost you more to replace it with a  cheap runaround or repair the car?  Do you have access to another one like your wifes?
