www.interparcel.com DHL service I don't think you need one either (£6.99 +vat)
www.parceltree.co.uk /hometextiles (ebay) you won't either (£6.49 + vat)
http://www.freightsearch.com - don't know, but very helpful, easily contactable via phone
You may also get about 10 messages prompting you to use some people called DPD, they are apparently very good, yet there doesn't seem be anyone who actually uses them- make of that what you will.
Thanks very much for them, Shall try one of them out.
I like to go on recommendation and know that from reading this thread that things can change quite quickly!0 -
Personally I don't trust any couriers or courier agents. I have been let down far too many times. In fact we have been let down so badly that we first spent £10500 on a second hand van, and have now spent £27000 on a brand new one. Even the company who we were told was the best of a bad bunch (Nightfreight), have let us down and cost us a fortune.
The only time we do send anything by courier we use Parcelforce.0 -
i've just purchased 2 items from ebay from 2 different sellers
the 1st was delivered by tnt , as both myself and wife are out most of the day the parcel was left in the porch
the 2nd parcel had an attempted delivery by fed-ex , the left a note which i phoned , i asked if they could leave it with my neighbour or in laws - this was out of the question unless i contacted the seller , i then told them my wife would be in next monday which again was no good as they only keep parcels for 5 days ,
do they really expect working people to stay at home and be there for them
i now have a 40 mile round trip to pick it up - should i ask for a collection fee0 -

from whom?
the seller who has sent the item or fedex?
funny you are happy for the item just to be left on the porch yet many complain about that very thing0 -
Should've set up a work address in paypal if you knew you weren't going to be in.
What do you expect for a cheap delivery service, they deliver when THEY can, not when you chose0 -

How do they know how genuine your neighbour is though? The company is paid to deliver the parcel to YOU, not your neighbour. What if the neighbour refused to hand it over to you? The sender/seller would complain that it hasn't been delivered, and the courier company have a signature showing they've delivered it to somebody else!
Different companies have different rules/procedures, and different drivers will follow these how they see fit.
In the future you should use a courier company who have a local depot to collect from, or get the item sent to someone that's in during the day0 -

As I see it the OP did ask the courier to deliver to someone who was in during the day (the next door neighbour). I presume that they also checked with the neighbours to see if this would be ok. I also presume that they can trust their neighbour, otherwise they wouldn't have asked the courier to deliver to them.
The trouble is that couriers, and many other delivery services, as well as domestic appliance repairers, utilitiy companies.....etc will very rarely give a time of day for them turning up. If you are lucky they may say am or pm. This is obviously no good if someone has to take a full day off work each time they have a delivery.
The way we get around this problem when delivering our beds is that we plan the route on Autoroute. We then allow time for each drop going by experience. We then contact each customer by both e-mail and by phone (and by text if we don't get to speak to anyone), to give them a delivery time, explaining that they should allow an hour either way. We also give the customer our drivers mobile number. And our driver will call if they are ahead or behind, or if the customer has requested a call when the van is on it's way. I don't see why other companies can't do the same thing0
