is the sign up process for these 3 a bit "old worldy". opened one with Ulster yesterday and RBS today and nothing has happened beyond "we have your application and will be in touch with what to do next".

no emails or texts or anything.

edit: got a RBS email a few minutes later. nothing from Ulster.
I didn’t hear anything from Ulster until getting a letter asking me to send back a signed application form. Means I’m now likely to miss the deadline for the switch offer.
pretty sure the 20th October is only to apply by. you have till 2nd Dec to then fulfill the other criteria.
Hopefully you’re correct. These are the terms:

    1. New customers
    To get £175, you must:
    (a) apply online for an Ulster Select account (‘new eligible account’) via ulsterbank.co.uk between 13th September 2022 and 20th October by 5pm (the application must then successfully result in an open account); and
    (b) as part of your application, transfer a non-Ulster current account to your new eligible account (which includes closing your non-Ulster current account and moving all your payment instructions to your new eligible account) using the Current Account Switch Service online; and
    (c) after your new account is opened and before 2nd December 2022, deposit £1,250 into your new eligible account and log into our mobile banking service.
If you meet these conditions, we’ll pay £175 into your new eligible account by 29th December 2022. 2. Existing customers
If you already have an Ulster Select, ufirstgold, Private Current or ufirst Private account (‘existing eligible account’) opened prior to 13th September 2022, to get £175 you must:
    a) by 5pm, 20th October 2022, transfer a non-Ulster current account to your existing eligible account (which includes closing your non-Ulster current account and moving all your payment instructions to your existing eligible account) using the Current Account Switch Service online; and
    (b) before 2nd December 2022, deposit £1,250 into your existing eligible account and log into our mobile banking service. If you meet these conditions, we’ll pay £175

I’d assumed the 20th October switch deadline applied to new and existing customers.

Same, so far, for me for Ulster. Applied for Ulster account last week. Heard absolutely nothing from them - no email, no text, no call, no letter.  It's as if I hadn't applied at all.

The final page of the application process has a headline saying "How did your application go?" and gives three outcomes :

I've finished my application and have my account details

I've finished my application but have been asked for more information

My application was declined and I don't know why

None of those apply - no account details were given, no request was made for more information, no decline was given. It's a very odd approach to account opening!  Maybe a letter is on its way.

Ulster are the only one who asked me to provide photographic evidence of ID documents (hence me being unable to try them yet, having not renewed my passport since lockdown). RBS approved me on electronic checks alone, albeit with a 24 hour wait between application and account opening. NatWest opened my account within minutes of application.

I did try for the Ulster one in this current offer period but they required passport or DVLA ID, neither of which I have.
I might be imagining it, but I thought you needed to have an address in Northern Ireland to open an Ulster bank account too.

    Nope, Anywhere in the UK.
I tried to open an Ulster account once as a dummy account. It went fine until right at the end it asks you where your local branch is... which they only have in Northern Ireland. So you can open an account anywhere in UK as long as it's Northern Ireland.

That's incorrect. As I've stated before, anyone in the UK can open current accounts with Ulster Bank. Local branch? If you're in England, just take your pick. Your mistake was not selecting a branch of your choice and carrying on with your application.

I have an account with the Bank of Scotland and my local branch is set as Glasgow. Never been there in my life. BoS don't mind.

*nods* I'm not aware of any current account provider, bar Cumberland BS, that specifies that one must be a certain distance from a local branch. Good thing too, as a lot of people in smaller towns no longer have them.

Do ulster do that HooYu crap where you upload a photo of your passport and a video selfie and a robot checks them?  The gf and I did rbs and while mine was quick and easy the gf tried for about half an hour before giving up.  Kept rejecting the selfie.  "put your nose on the screen"  "move back to focus" "move closer" "ID rejected".

Didn't help that I was sat there laughing and shouting "put your nose on the DOT", while she got more and more !!!!!! off.

I'll going to give it a go, had a NatWest switch reward earlier in the year.
Opened an RBS account a few days ago and the switch has started so let's see if I get the switch reward from RBS as well.

Danske Bank NI only allow applications from NI.

Neither them nor Cumberland insist you close the account if you move beyond their 'catchment' however.
