At least it's got a sticker on it with the old meter reading.
Also, you'll now be able to monitor your usage with the new meter. If the reported figure drops significantly without you changing anything, it does indeed suggest a fault with the removed meter. The new one may not be reporting to the DCC/supplier, but they will be able to charge you for gas used when they either change it back or tell you to keep it, simply by getting a current reading from it.
The funny thing about the 21940 reading from the old meter (which I saw) is that an hour prior to that it had been 21938, and I hadn't used any gas at all this morning.
  • I thought that you said on Page 1 that you couldn’t have a smart meter because your meter box is in the ground!

Excellent memory! And, yep, that's what I got told!
  • I don't *think* the 99999 reading is to do with it being in "dumb" mode - I think it is something to do with testing - and you should in due course see it move past the zero point...I have a feeling we have a couple of former meter testers here who have full gen on this...

A quick note to say thanks to all for indulging my energy-based woes over the last few weeks and offering advice and suggestions. I think Bulb have been a little taken aback with some of my surprisingly well-informed responses.

I suppose my fate now sits with the gas meter gods and we shall see what the coming weeks bring.

If this new smart meter does the same as the old one then the next suspect is the regulator.
When I was on the job back in 2017 we were all doing  regulator checks trying to get all the faulty regulators found which Cadent had fitted throughout our area and I presume others too.

Main fault was that they ( J42 s ) were not threaded in far enough and could get knocked awry  and leak  if pushed hard enough but there were others which had the wrong pressure type fitted too.

Maybe Zandoni the ex meter tester could tell us if an incorrect or too high regulator pressure could make the index advance forward irregually on these digital meters ?

It did worry me when he said he wouldn't be changing the regulator. However he did a tightness test, as a previous engineer had done, and all was apparently fine?

Agreed though I’m not a firmer meter tester😊. When we had SMETS2 installed 28 Sept, engineer said gas meter started at 9999 to allow for the gas used while they were testing the installation. As he said it would, it ticked over to 0000 later same day.
