Although it can seem that buying food in bulk means it's a bargain, if you store it for some time in an old inefficient fridge freezer, then the cost to run that cancels out or exceeds the saving made on the food.
Unless you live a long way from a supermarket, it is probably cheaper to let them store frozen food and only run a small freezer yourself.Barnsley, South Yorkshire

Thanks all. I didn't expect so many answers back 😊 It's been really interesting to read all your comments.
I guess my 'use' while away isn't that bad. I can't get rid of the fish. Goldfish seem very hardy and live for ages it seems, although if they died (3 of them), I wouldn't replace

After reading this thread, I went on an exercise to see how low I could get my instant-usage reading, relying on the info on my smart meter hub. With absolutely everything I could find switched off, I got it down to 9 Watts. The only thing left on was the smart meter hub itself. Microwave on standby was 1W, Wireless Router was 1W, Various Fused switches totalled 1W, CH boiler programmer was 1W, lots of 1W dotted around the place, but I never did find that last 9 Watts!0

anybody like us have a clock radio? on non stop of course. we have other radios as well but I assume when they are off they are off. (correct me if I'm wrong please!)
we turn off our microwave (but that's because it's likes to turn itself on at random moments) but not our electric oven (which has a clock going all the time). Or our gas stove top - which must be hooked into the electric to spark but presumably that's the only time it does anything.
biggest issue is the tech left on....tv, 2 pcs, phones & laptops charging. even my watch needs to be charged an hour a week so those all add up.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on Debt Free Wannabe, Old Style Money Saving and Pensions boards. eliza2811 - something you could try is what I have done - switch off mains electricity at the main fuse box. Then, see if you miss anything which previously had power. You could also add back various fuses or breakers, zone by zone to see what impact it has on your app. for energy consumption. It could help you find any energy-sapping devices.0

We use 3-4kw per day when away from home, everything left in standby, with only pond pump, Cctv, FF, Smart alexa devices and router left on. The FF is the biggest culprit, even though ours is rated at 450kwh per annum, it can use 2kwh per day, I think the 450kwh is when conditions are optimum like the MPG claims with cars.0
