  • I use about 8 kWh a day.

3 bed detached. 65" OLED, PS4, soundbar, wifi router, LED lamp, smart meter display, NEST controller in the living room. American FF in the kitchen, oven (almost never used), Freezer in the garage, mains shower.

Have a lodger who has a gaming PC, an echo dot, a monitor and occasionally uses a portable AC unit.

Not sure how to get significantly lower in energy use short of turning all those things bar the router, nest and home display off at the socket every night. House seems to cruise on about 400W an hour average.

Remember not to turn off the OLED at the plug. It must remain in standby.  However, if you turn off mobile devices in the TV menu you will knock about 7w off the standby use and that leaves it on less than 1w whilst in standby.

House seems to cruise on about 400W an hour average.
Houses will vary but background use could be in the 70-150w running rate ballpark.

Thanks for this, yes I forgot to mention I know not to turn the OLED off.

I also just realised I have a bearded dragon left by my ex that has bulbs on 12 hours a day, THAT is where the extra is coming from. Can't believe I forgot to mention him!

It has pretty good internet coverage and its the TV manual.  It runs a pixel refresh in standby which can take anything from minutes to hours.

Next time you turn the TV into standby, listen for a click.  Sometimes it may only be seconds after but sometimes, you may not hear it for minutes or even hours.  It is only after that click is it safe to turn to TV off.   It will reduce the TV life if you turn it off before the refresh is complete.

  • I'm averaging 5kWh per day atm. 1 adult, 2bed semi-detached, gas boiler. At home almost 24/7 (unable to work).

Not sure what I can reduce: TV, router, fridge-freezer, electric cooker, imac that is off when not in use. Also two large snake vivs, but I can't reduce their elec usage!

I suspect my fridge is using a lot and will be testing with a TP monitor plug when I can get help accessing the socket.

Heat lamps on for several hours each day use a lot of electric, keeping those snakes will be expensive.

I've got tortoises that will need similar care for a few months, from when they come in from the garden (soon, as temps drop) until they hibernate, 4 months in the fridge Dec-Mar, and again heat lamps until warm enough outdoors. This summer our female laid eggs, we now have 1 hatchling that needs 8-10 hours under an 80W bulb and we won't hibernate him, eeek. He'll need rehoming eventually, maybe sooner rather than later to cut out bills.

I’m averaging about 9KW per day at the minute. 2 adults 2 children in a 4 bed detached. I work from home and the kids are currently at home with me on consoles etc so this should decrease a bit when they go back to school. I have three freezers on the go, use the dishwasher almost every day and washing at least twice a week.

I’d like to get my usage down a bit more but I’ve already cut back. Last year I was averaging almost 20KW per day as I tumble dried everything and used portable air con units a lot. Despite the heat this year I’ve only had it on three times so I’m quite proud of that.
