We live in. 4 bed detached chalet bungalow. I have just had my new estimated charges through from British Gas and my annual bill is £9210! They say I will use 22,000 kw of gas! How is this even possible? We only use gas for hot water and heating. I’m terrified!

"We only use gas for hot water and heating"
Thats what does it.3 -
22000KWh is almost double the average. But that will not bring you to £9200 per annum.
22000KWh by 0.15p is £3300 plus £100 standing charge.
That means you use £5810 - £170 = £5640 for electricity. At £0.52 that us 10846KWh electricity, more than 3 times the average used for the cap calculations.

I meant not cooking0

Cooking with gas is pennies, its hot water and heating that is where the high consumption is.2
-
Cooking costs next to nothing in comparison to heating and hot water.
A bungalow is the most expensive building type to heat.1 -
What has been your previous annual consumption in kWh for both electricity and gas ?
I use 7,400 kWh of gas for heating and hot water in a well insulated home, but only actually heating 1/3 of the bedrooms and 1/2 of the bathrooms.
Do you have the recommended loft insulation levels ?
Are you home all day ?

Our walls and loft are insulated. I have been taking a reading daily for the last month ( I know it’s summer) but we are using 1 unit of gas per day and between 16-23 units of electric. Turned all the outside lights off ages ago and generally only have light on in the room we are in. Our boiler is only 3 years old. I just don’t understand it. We don’t have a hot tubs or anything major to drain electric. I may ask to get meters checked? I can’t sleep for worrying0

1 unit of gas (11.2kwh) will be for hot water i presume but that should heat the tank twice really.
16 -23 kwh of electricity is a lot, you have to find out where that is going.1 -
Does the boiler provide instant hot water or does it heat a tank ?
You baseline electricity consumption is very high, if you have a water tank has someone left an immersion heater switched on ?
Do you have any American style fridge/freezers, heated tanks for fish etc ?1 -
Usual culprits for high electricity usage are immersion left on continuous, PCs running 24 hours a day, heated towel rail, American style big fridge freezer, the freezer you had forgot about in the garage, etc.0
