Hinkley Point C is on a CfD contract for about 10p/kWh wholesale. "The current situation" has day-ahead electricity prices of 50p/kWh or more.

I hope this energy crisis won't lead to house fires from candles being used, to save energy or because of blackouts, or illicit efforts to tap into the grid, and the NHS being even more overwhelmed because of respiratory infections brought on by living in cold damp mouldy homes.

She needs a tent in one of those caravans.4

When you say tent, are you thinking 4 poster bed? Many of the modern ones don't seem to have proper canopies and thick curtains, but some should be strong enough to use that way.

OP - I know it's desperate and I know what a struggle it will be for so many of us but anyone my age or above is likely to have grown up in:
a) A house with no central heating
b) A house with no double glazing
c) Old suitcases, carpet offcuts and boxes of Christmas decorations were the most common form of loft insulation...
d) At a time when it seemed we actually had a 'winter' insomuch as it actually snowed pretty often and the snow stayed for weeks - not 2 hours.
Waking up and the windows were frosted inside and the top blankets were damp from condensation - you could see your own breath - was 'normal' - I guess we didn't miss what we'd never had - it was just how it was. My family were pretty middling on income - not rich - not poor - 1.5 wages coming in and a 3 bed semi. I'm not suggesting 'nostalgia' will keep us warm but...We certainly didn't have tents in the bedroom.
I know not every house in the country has double glazing but I believe over 90% do. Modern insulation even if not the full recommended depth is way better than bits of old carpet and cardboard; Fabric technology like fleece may be the devil's own fabric to the environmentalists but its cheap, warm and dries in about 45 seconds and; gadget technology like USB heated blankets and microwavable rice bags are not beyond the means of many of us. Our ability to keep warm without central heating is so much better than than it was only a few decades ago.
All the advice about getting a better quilt, a hot water bottle and thicker socks is a far better investment of scarce funds than a tent that will get sopping wet from condensation - offer nothing in the way of warmth and probably cause mildew on your bedding. Please don't think I'm trivialising your idea or doing a "when I was a lad..." routine - I genuinely believe we are in a much better position to keep warm than we were in the 60's/70's but I do not underestimate what huge changes many of us will have to make.

Screw insulation boards to the ceiling, or insulated plasterboard, or just staple blankets up lol
Or build a 4 post bed like the Victorians would use.

I'm no fan of this government, but what do you expect them to do about global gas prices?1
