Old 3 bed stone property, and we have our consumption down to around 2000L per year. The heating is on all day as there is always someone in, but we have the thermostat turned right back to 17C and wear jumpers or a fleece in the house. It ain't exactly warm but I really don't want to be buying 3000L per year! We have a modern condensing Worcester boiler and 1000L tank (our old 1300L tank was better). We normally fill in Sept and again in Jan, plus top up whenever the price looks reasonable and the tank will take 500L plus. The vast majority of our usage happens between Dec-Feb, depending on temps.

Looking back at my records the last 12 months I'm surprised ours is low as it is.
Last September's I ordered 750l which took us to full, just had my latest delivery of 750l and only 640l would fit in. That's for a 3 bed 1950's semiMake £2023 in 2023 (#36) £3479.30/£2023

As of 1 Oct Gas will be 10.3p / kWhr incl of VAT.
A litre of heating oil contains 10.35kWhr of energy. Prices in recent weeks have been in range of 90p to 103p per litre......which is say 8.8p to 10p per kWhr. At the moment it is cheaper than gas. But expect that to change.
August is the cheapest month to fill up.
Best is to fill up in August. Our 1300L tank will go from full to 20-30% in 6 weeks over winter. Our 15yr old boiler (which heats house and a water tank) is 85% efficient, Our daughter modern combi condenser boiler is 93% efficient but at our usage and age there is not worth updating
We use between 2400 and 3000l a year in a large 5 bed timber frame bungalow. Heating is on 10hr a day in winter (plus an extra hour or 2 if really bitter cold). We live on top of a hill and are exposed to any and all winds.
Summer usage heating water is negligible, Our boiler flat out, max winter temp setting is 4l per hour, Summer on min temp setting, water only is probably less than 2 litres a day.
My daughter, next door, old brick build 2 bed bungalow uses less than 2000litres a year. We recently changed her tank out for doubleskin at cost of 2500gbp for 1300l tank.
We get slight discount as we fill both tanks at same time. You want to order +1000 litres to get a discount.
I buy direct from oil supplier, joined a heating club 5 months ago but have never seen them better Our suppliers price.0 -
For the last ten years or so, I have transferred £175 a month to a separate (but virtual) "pot" for oil, so £2,100 a year.
When I set this up, it was on the basis that I use 3,500 Litres per year (for a small three-bed cottage in northern Scotland). At times, as prices have risen and fallen, the pot has been in reasonable surplus or a bit overdrawn.
At present, I have an empty tank and enough money in the pot to buy about 1,000 litres, which will just about last me to Christmas. At that point, there will only be enough in the pot to buy another 350 litres...
So it looks like my pot will be in deficit by the end of January and, at current prices, I would need to adjust my monthly transfer to £305 to cover my annualised costs.0 -
