Buster_Danog said:I have been scammed on ebay a few years ago - a blender that was in perfect working order all of a sudden stopped working when iit reached the buyer, so I had to give her a refund - I packaged it well so it shouldn't have got damaged. Maybe it did.....but I have my doubts.I would have had it returned even if it had cost me money just to verify it wasn't a scam. It does happen that things stop working within the 30 day period. It happened to me as a seller. As people on this forum have said, you need to factor in a certain amount of possible losses from sales on ebay but in my experience they tend to be a small amount.
I've just signed up to preloved, I might try the odd thing on there to see if they sell. I tried Vinted with no luck. I think it's probably easiest for me to stick to Ebay and Facebook marketplace.
Thanks for your input, the replies I have received have been very helpful.1 -
I haven't tried pre loved, I will be interested in hearing how you get on.

At the moment it is primarily ebay (I sell as a business but also have a private presence) and marketplace, plus the occasional bit of etsy.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. Personally I try Facebook first. It's perhaps the only thing that really rivals eBay I would say. Maybe I'm wrong? Suppose it depends on what you're selling.
A lot use Facebook as it's just easy. They have it installed on their phones anyway & it's easy for them to sit & scroll while they're laying on the sofa.
I use it first off because it's free & I get 100% profit. The down side to Facebook is there is a huuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuge amount of timewasters.
"Is this still for sale"
yes
and then you never hear from them again. OR they're "100% having it" but then don't turn up or change their mind at the last second.
If you can stand that then Facebook is fine.
When eBay send me their 80% off or £1max on FVF offers then I use them. Up side is the timewasters are much less. If someone bids then they generally buy it. Down side is that it's a scammers paradise. Very easy for a dishonest buyer to scam an honest seller. Another down side is eBay take some of your profits.I think "Is this still for sale" is a button in the the Messenger reply to ads, so you don't even have to type to send it.0 -

Having said that, I have exactly the same problem with Olio - and I'm giving items away for free on there! The system reminds them before they send a message to respond with a time and day they will collect, how many they want (if there's more than 1 available). Most people don't bother, so you agree that they can have it and then have to ask them when they will collect, how many they want - which they respond to many hours or days later, often with a vague response, so you end up chasing them up again! You'd think that if they're getting stuff for free they would be more eager and responsive....but no. I'm giving up and just taking stuff to a charity shop in future!0 -
I know this thread is primarily about online. But don't forget the joys of standing around in a field near your house at a boot fair, or if you're lucky, indoors at a table sale. At least there you can look the buyer in the eye and maybe offer an on the spot discount to get rid of something no one else will buy. Just be aware of pitch fees, but then they're just the equivalent of online seller fees.
As for online, well eBay probably have the biggest customer base for second hand items. Amazon is more for new or very nearly new items. the other sites mentioned are smaller and cater to a niche audience so you'd need to do more research as to what will sell on each site.0 -

I've got some items listed on ebay now, and sold some already, so quite pleased. The cost of postage and packing these days has taken me a little by surprise - I must work out the cost of that before I offer free postage!
