Throwing food in the bin

I hate to see good food wasted and find it totally immoral. When I worked, I always used to take home leftover food from "working buffet lunches". When we held a milestone anniversary party at our local Chinese restaurant, they asked us if we would like the leftovers (of which there were vast amounts) packed up so we could freeze them, which we did. Also at a recent family funeral wake at a hotel, we asked the catering staff to pack up the buffet leftovers and hand them out to any guests who wanted them. I suspect the staff were rather upset as this probably represented free perks for them.0

I was just browsing the Times Eco Worrier blog and found a link to WRAP's website about minimising wasted food - not read it all it has recipes and ideas for leftovers

we did really well this Christmas and instead of getting sick of turkey and chucking it I made 4 tin foil dishes of turkey and gravy meals for 2 for whenever we want a roast dinner and 3 same of the lamb we had boxing day. Plus I prepared all the cheap carrots and onions I had from the supermarket and froze them (usually in the bin).
After New Year Im listing everything in the freezer and meal planning as I've joined the grocery challenge and am going all out to stop wasting food and money.
Happy New Year everyone.

Any leftovers we have, which isn't too much is saved for the home made dog food for my little beasts.. haha
I mix old potatoes, carrots, and some rank frozen cheap sausages we didn't like.. plus any meat leftover, or any cut off fat etc.. also, anything that has gone out of date, like a whole bag of wholemeal pasta in the cupboard! Mix it with some cheap oxo / gravy granules.
They get a lovely treat, we get to stroke much softer fur.. (seriously!), and I have the joy of knowing they are getting some nutritious meals. & they love the homecooked meals so much more!! It's a joy to see them tucking in. I got some plastic food containers, 3 for 99p or something, and I freeze the meals ready for whenever I need them.BSC Member 155

My thoughts exactly..................................:rotfl:Sam B0 -
I was amazed when taking a straw poll in the staffroom, there's only 2 of us who will save the left over veggies from Sunday roast (the ones still in the pan i mean). I freeze them in dishes for my little girl's or throw them in a soup I'm making and my friend freezes all hers and then makes bubble and squeak when there's enough.
I can't imagine throwing food out that I've paid for and paid to buy. I've just invested in a "dutch oven" so that I can cook the chicken in it and throw the veggies around it whilst cooking so that I can just pull the cooked chicken out and then whizz up what's left in the pan for instantly made soup. Initial expense but hopefully long term gain because as well as getting "free" soup cooked, I shall only be heating a gas ring for 1.5hrs instead of the whole oven. We don't need roast potatoes every week, and when we do want them I can put on the small oven instead.

"leftover fruit - stewed" - yep, having some right now, stewed up in little bit of water and honey - nice on my porridge.
I get quite annoyed the odd time I havent realised a bit of fruit is about to "go over" and half of an apple is one big bruise or something.
Thanks for this - had some eating apples that were a little old so got to them before OH binned them, chopped them, stewed them with raisins, sultanas and some cinnamon and a little syrup and now have them on my porridge instead of bought frozen fruit.
Just managed to stop OH chucking away brown bananas this morning - they will be mashed, frozen and made into a banana cake at some pointworking on clearing the clutterDo I want the stuff or the space?0 -
I'm still hanging my head in shame that I'm binning the leftover turkey that's bee in the fridge since Christmas day!!
Normally I hate to waste anything and my fiends think I'm joing when I beg them not to throw away leftovers/chicken bones etc etc!0 -
