a friend of mine would cook a huge joint or chicken for sunday lunch (for herself, dh and 2 ds) and whatever was left was put straight into the bin!! It used to horrify me as I was bringing up 2 kids on my own and could have made meals for best part of a week from the wasted meat. I never had the nerve to ask for it; You'd think she would have known better because at the time her dh was an undischarged bankrupt

edited to say - she's not my friend anymore since I realised we had severe incompatability issues!!!:D
... don't throw the string away. You always need string! :D

I rarely throw anything away...tonight I had to throw a whole brand new wholemeal loaf as I forgot to check my small oven which has no thermostat and just keeps heating...normally turn it off 5 minutes after bread goes in....burnt half an inch through so birds will get their charcoal tomorrow...but I will feel guilty for ages

  • Just got home from my youngest DD's .Have brought home the remainder of the delicious leg of lamb which we had for dinner. I shall strip all the meat off the bone, and make some sheperd's pies for the freezer tomorrow .There is more than enough to make at least six single portions
spuds (already in the veggie bag) about 30p
Oxo cube and a tablespoonful of Bisto powder to make the gravy(about 10p).
and a couple of carrots which are also in the veggie bag (about 10 p)
    Cost 6x Sheperd's pies for my freezer = 50p
Cost if bought from Mr T's already made =£6.00
My girls don't call me Frau Frugal for nothing:D :D:D
plus I know whats gone into them ,no nasty chemicals :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

the only food i throw away is left on plates. if things are getting near the sell by date most will freeze. i make 'end of the week soup' once a month with whatever veggies need eating up, the reat of the time excess veggies are choped and frozen in a container and added to caseroles etc when required..left over fruit is stewed and frozen or turned into bannana cake and frozen.

"leftover fruit - stewed" - yep, having some right now, stewed up in little bit of water and honey - nice on my porridge.

I get quite annoyed the odd time I havent realised a bit of fruit is about to "go over" and half of an apple is one big bruise or something.
  • I hate wasting food too. Simple reason being i cant afford to.

I work in a coop and the amount of food i see reduced and destined for the bin is unreal - yesterday for example i managed to collar my friend as she was going to waste everything - bread thats been baked that morning going in the bin, and i was gutted becuase i really jsut dont have space for it (my freezer is tiny!!!!!) but i did manage to save a bag of bread rolls, bag of baguettes and two blueberry muffins before they were scraped. I normally end up coming home with bags of veg, bits fo veg or fruit, the veg is normally frozen to be made into soup or used the next day for a roast etc. Fruti i tend to stew or use the next day to make an apple pie, strawberries nad cream which DS loves. I hate seeing it all wasted.

Ive told bf next year im planning to run the freezer as low as i can get it or buy a new freezer so that i can stock it with my shop brought bargains because i usually bring home bags of items (bag of apples for example) for 10p. Whcih means i can fill my whole freezer (at present) for about £1 - £1.50

My mum is not wasteful and uses value products but my sister on the other hand is a nightmare - everything has to be brand name and if its nto eaten that meal she bins it!!! have just converted my MIL to the joys that are value products (not all but some) and shes happy now her shoppign bill is down and shes started on the savign leftovers thing too whcih is nice to hear, jsut need to convert the sister and sister in law (i have converted her to a tescos tart now though!)

I must be the only one in my family though who enjoys cooking from scratch and knowing that im stocking the freezer with nutricious, homemade meals that all of us can eat and enjoy with food that is still good but cheap at half the price.
    Time to find me again
  • I hate waste - was brought up by my grandmother and things were tight! There was never any food waste.

Before veggies go off, I will cook a soup or stew. I freeze cream, creme fraiche, red thai curry sauce (love that stuff) in freezer cubes. Anything that says - use within x days after opening I will either use up or freeze - it's astonishing really how much stuff you can freeze. I freeze left over wine and beer (great for tempura batter).

I also have a list of things I have in the freezer and get nervous when my freezer goes too empty....
  • There's only one problem - by the time i've made something of the leftovers - I've leftovers to make a meal of !!!!

Just what do you do with leftover leftovers ??

can you just peel and freeze veggies or do you have to blanche first?

i have loads of carrots and onions and now potatoes i've bought cheap and want to prepare for stews etc.

And has anyone got a banana bread recipe for a breadmaker or do you just bung one in so to speak?

    xx
