I just wonder how many of these discounts are still around since the thread was started 10 years ago!

Perhaps we need a new and shiny updated thread??
    Excellent idea.

I reached 60 last year and was rubbing my hands gleefully at the thought of all those 60+ goodies.

So far the only benefits have been a couple of quid saved on a leisure class, eligibility for a local pub's 60+ off-peak lunch menu and an invite to our community's 'Over 60s' Christmas party.

Free prescriptions sounds great but I haven't needed any medication. I live in a rural area and would need to drive 15 miles to use a Senior Railcard. Buses are as rare as hen's teeth even if I qualified for a bus pass (I don't). I don't fancy paying for 5 years National Trust membership just to qualify for a 25% discount thereafter .

Are there any senior discounts available to country-dwellers?

  • Hi thanks for all the info, many have mentioned the senior railcard, but if you normally travel as a couple, (no need to share surname, could just be as friends), please look into the 2together card, as similar perks to the single railcard but only one fee.

Even better is the Disabled Person's Railcard, if you qualify. Any hearing aid user can get one, and a companion also travels at the reduced price.

Assuming No Covid  (sigh...) - some cinemas do discounts for day-time screenings - £3 at my local Odeon, plus tea and a biscuit!
Now a gainfully employed bassist again - WooHoo!

There is also a veterans railcard
Not age specific, just open to anyone who had ever been in any of the UK armed forces
    Including the territorial army etc
Has the same 3rd off as other railcards

I assume that an old style paper drivers licence is not accepted?
