Fit watch?

@Grumpy_chap, it's probably worth contacting Garmin UK customer support (via webchat). I've just done this for my watch, which was 15 months old and started playing up with random menus opening, buttons not always working and so on (possibly too much swimming! It's rated to be waterproof, but apparently the buttons can leak if you press them underwater - pretty sure I haven't done this but have used it a lot in water). They asked me to confirm a few things and then confirmed that it was a hardware failure, and they're exchanging my watch for a reconditioned one. It was all very easy. The worst thing is waiting for the exchange to arrive - I'm using an ancient one to track runs/swims in the meantime but am missing all the fancy metrics I've got used to on the newer one
I appreciate that your watch is older, so they may not offer a free exchange - but the Garmin customer support here in the UK seems good. I have known of a few different people getting faulty chest strap heart rate monitors replaced, even ones well out of warranty, and they gave a friend the choice of a very cheap reconditioned watch or a hefty discount on a new model when her watch (several years old) died. If nothing else, they may be able to advise about a battery replacement - not sure if that's possible - or anything else that you can try!2

            Thanks @catclaires - that's a great idea. I'll feedback once I have an update.
I am never really sure what the life of these watches should be - mine is a 2020 device (pre-COVID).1

So, I contacted Garmin chat support and asked about expected life-span. They said there was no expected life-span, battery degradation will happen, but should not be as extreme as I experienced.
Anyway, they offered to exchange the current device for a refurbished device with 90 day warranty for £60, so I have taken that solution.
Out of interest, what sort of percentage was offered as the "hefty discount"?catclaires said:

I was not offered a discount solution but if the refurbished device does not meet expectations, I might go for that option and change to a Forerunner.0
