It’s not just EV insurance getting more expensive. (It’s expensive for a Picanto because my daughter who isn’t a permanent UK resident is a named driver on the policy.) Guess I’ll be shopping around.

Lots of people want a Tesla, either because they see the brand as some sort of status, or they like the bells and whistles, or because they see it as a properly designed electric car. OH, whose previous cars were BMW and Mercedes, was happy to drive a Tesla.
I also think there's an increasing number of people who are going off the brand because of Musk. For some reason, its getting a bit like Apple where people love the brand or hate the brand, and those somehow become more important than whether the product meets their needs.
As evidenced by these bumper stickers:

On the other hand - If Elon Musk wasn't crazy, Tesla & SpaceX wouldn't exist.
The SpaceX craziness is one thing; it's the antisemitic and pro-Russia sort I'm not as keen on.

Yeah but that doesn't make nice right wing headlines, try again.

My wife has an electric car and I have petrol. Insurance for both renew on the same day with the same insurer. Both have increased by exactly 80.2% compared with last year. I'm sure as a newspaper headline this would be "Electric car insurance increases by over 80%"

The DT article doesn't explain how their sampling was arranged.  In particular,  the sample of EVs would be unlikely to include any vehicles older than 10 years whereas petrol & diesel samples might include much older (& hence lower value) examples.  Hopefully same method was used for each individual month which would allow some credence to the trends noted.
It's also roughly in line with what would be expected.

OH has just update her insurance. 80kWh Enyaq, 40k insured miles, 15k business (she works at 2 London area airports, often not the one she's officially based at and I occasionally use her car if leaving home first and its easier to get out/she leaves first and mine is easier to get out) came to around £900 for the year. That's about double the equivalent of last year.

She's in a low risk job (pilot), I'm in a medium to high risk job (although a change from 'Entertainment' to 'Holding Company' a few years ago as a sector probably brings the premium down considerably).

I have renewed my policy today, this time with LV=. While holding on for them on the phone (15 minute queue) I did an online quote omitting my daughter as she won’t be visiting again until the summer holidays. (It isn’t possible to get an online quote for non UK residents). The premium including breakdown cover (which was also included in the Saga price) was £241. The price without breakdown cover was £186!

I had obtained a price on a comparison website and it worked out £17.50 more with LV= so it was worth visiting their own website. Saga (my current insurer) did not appear on the comparison website for this car although they usually do.

Some figures for the number of private EV sales last year - they actually fell 19% in numerical terms.

Private buyers slam the brakes on electric cars as sales slump - down to just a quarter of new purchases

    • Individuals bought 71,984 of the vehicles last year, in 2022 it was 88,910

Volkswagen will delay the launch of its forthcoming small EV due to a relaxation of expected tougher Euro 7 pollution laws, allowing ICE vehicles to sold for longer than predicted.

The new small electric hatchback, based on the ID.2all concept revealed in March 2022, was due to arrive in 2025 and sit below the ID.3 with a retail price of around 25,000 euros (£21,500).

But the German firm has reportedly decided to reveal the car in 2025 and has kicked the launch date back by a year to 2026, Automotive News Europe reported – citing German car magazine Auto Motor und Sport – due to Euro 7 pollution rules being watered down.

Some interesting comments in that article

It seems to me nobody wants one and them that have one are going back to ICE

Makes you wonder if they will ever take off unless we are forced to have one

    Is that democrasy ?
