New fixed deal from British Gas

@foxmeister
You are right - for South West region (where I live) the tariffs are:
Fixed:
EU: 33.86
ES: 57.106
GU: 10.285
GS: 29.959
EPG
EU: 33.859
ES: 52.643
GU: 10.426
GS: 28.485
So on fixed, the only thing cheaper are Gas Units. On my annual usage, gas works out £9 cheaper and Electric is £16 more, so extra cost of fixed tariff is £7!
However, BG have emailed to say fixed is cheaper, so if they charge higher than EPG on the next bill I will complain. They haven't actually confirmed what the fixed tariff will be now. I believe they are meant to reduce it, so it won't be higher than the EPG, so an adjusted fixed tariff may be less than the EPG, hence why they are advising me to stay with it?0 -
no one actually knows how much gas you would use so its going to be hard to say when the numbers are so close which is going to be higher or lower until the end of winter. if it's a cold or long winter you would be better off with the cheaper gas rate but if you end up not using as much as forecast then you might be better off with the slightly lower standing charge. it wouldn't take much usage one way or another for it to change.Almost everything will work again if you unplug it for a few minutes, including you. It's amazing how those with a can-do attitude and willingness to 'pitch in and work' get all the luck, isn't it?
Please consider buying some pet food and giving it to your local food bank collection or animal charity. Animals aren't to blame for the cost of living crisis.1 -

Quite right that no-one knows how much they will use - particularly as people are naturally cutting back on energy usage now.
I've looked at my 12 years worth of month by month usage spreadsheet and my highest ever gas usage still puts me 98p worse off, sticking with the fixed. However, as British Gas have emailed to say "your fixed tariff is still the cheapest option" I would expect my bill to be lower if I stay on the fixed tariff - even though my calculations say I won't be. I would therefore assume that BG are going to adjust/reduce my fixed tariff in some way.
I might contact them to find out what calculations they used to decide fixed is best for me.0 -
It says on the BG website that they will apply a discount to the fixed rate but not how much. My tariff pages show the same values as pre-Oct 1
"If you’re on a fixed-rate tariff, we'll automatically apply the EPG discount to your unit rates from 1st October. If the discount means your rates are above the EPG, we'll be in touch to make sure you're offered the cheapest tariff available"0 -
that's what i mean. last year was a very mild winter so theres a good chance people will use more gas this year for the same amount of heat (same house temp). or maybe will turn down the thermostat because of cost and would use less gas. so your 12 month usage isn't the only thing to look at. maybe a 5 year average if you have it and your household hasn't changed much in the time?
everything they say is talking abut the unit rate not the standing charge and they are the only bits the government discount seem to apply to so i think they will say that if you want o change to the variable rate you can but its on you to work out if you think it will be cheaper or not depending on your plans for heating for the year. i dont think they will say the standing charge comes into it at all.

RL11 yes it's all in the wording unit rate will be discounted doesn't mention standing charge. And martin lewis confirmed on his show that energy companys wouldn't discount standing charges. in the yorkshire region ours are
Fixed:EU: 33.029ES: 54.007GU: 10.244GS: 29.959EPGEU: 33.028ES: 49.546GU: 10.243GS: 28.485
Slight difference to yours as I think the ofgem price cap is regional
6p a day, £22 a year cheaper on the government discounted tariff just in standing charges. But if BG are doing this to a million customers its a tidy sum for them.1 -
@foxmeister
Your EPG is better for all four rates, so have BG contacted you to say you should switch to standard tariff? - as per what they have said they will do.
And have you switched? I'm staying with fixed for the moment as they have emailed me to say fixed is cheaper0 -
@RL11 I've had nothing off british gas I've messaged them and commented on there facebook posts and they seem to be avoiding the standing charge question. I was waiting for correspondence from them as I'm free to switch to the variable rate, but saying that they should have done it from October 1st.1

Apologies for posting on this thread, I am on the BG Fixed May 23v2 tariff and they have sent an email today saying it's better to switch to their Standard Variable as per the below comparison:
Fixed:
EU: 35.057p per kWh
ES: 44.767p per day
GU: 10.309p per kWh
GS: 31.329p per day
Standard Variable:
EU: 35.056p per kWh
ES: 38.937p per day
GU: 10.309p per kWh
GS: 28.485p per day
So they have applied the EPG on Unit rates and not on Standing Charge! The only thing I am confused about is, is there anything still "variable" in the Standard Variable tariff which can go up prior to 2024 or is it all "fixed" till 2024 as per the EPG rates?0 -
@pali2021
Your standard variable is lower or the same (GU), so makes sense they suggest going to standard variable. I would hope this variable is "fixed" for the next 2 years but I guess BG can still adjust any of the four variables, given it's technically still a variable rate.
My variable rates are all lower except for GU but they have said I'm better staying with my fix0
