Amazon complaint

I ordered 2 packs of 24 AA duracell batteries on Friday under Prime and when the box arrived yesterday - I thought that it appeared a little light
When opened - apart from heaps of paper wrapping, all that was in the box were 3 AA batteries on their own
I had an online chat with Amazon who are refunding my £25 but what I want to know is how this could have happened - its blatant theft !
If I was half as smart as I think I am - I'd be twice as smart as I REALLY am.

Blatant theft or blatant shoddy fulfillment or blatant split packaging.
It'll have happened somewhere between warehouse and delivery, but it doesn't really matter as long as you get the refund..1 -

How do you know they were removed and not ever in there in the first place?
I'm not sure how you tell that something has been clearly removed from a box, unless you'd checked the box earlier.
If you're basing it on resealed packaging, then that points the finger away from Amazon and in another more obvious direction.0 -
Have you ever seen how Amazon packing works ? The packer simply boxes what the computer sends to their station. Querying it would reduce their packing rate, the computer can't be wrong so they just get on with it. Unless there was clear evidence the package had been opened and resealed then a fulfilment error is the most likely cause.

Whilst that might be the case, more likely is that somebody made a mistake.
Amazon have taken your word for it, given you a refund and presumably let you keep the three batteries.
I am sure you were being totally honest but sadly there are those that aren't.1 -
