I cannot understand why deodorant and aftershave are categorised with dry ice as potentially dangerous in luggage.
Me neither. It’s a UK trip with the luggage going by road.  It’s normal to have these in your suitcase. I wouldn’t have thought to check any prohibited items list for day to day toiletries either.

I am assuming they do international train journeys that requires the cases to be flown then its easier to do a total blanket ban than going oh if you are going here then you can do this and that.  Makes it a lot easier for the staff.
But as a user of service its up to you check the T & C's you are signing up to.
Even if they do international travel  with flights you can still put deodorant and aftershave in your suitcase, indeed you have to as you can't put it in your hand luggage.
jobgypsy........I hope you can get this sorted out maybe a chat with your local newspaper would be in order, this so should not have happened, was there a rep on the trip?
  • Aftershave and perfume is usually in glass bottles.

Bottles smash and could ruin everything else in the bag.

I suspect it’s probably just to avoid any liability regarding badly packed goods breaking open and bags being delivered with smashed glass and stinking clothes.

Businesses are entitled to list goods they consider as hazardous and problematic if they choose to.

Agreed, but I can really understand why they didn't think day to day toiletries would be an issue. It wouldn't even have crossed my mind if I'd been the OP (especially as they don't do much travel). In any case, the point is that having been alerted to the mistake, the OP agreed to the required action and was repeatedly assured their luggage would be delivered.
Not carrying perfume and aerosols is a fairly standard term of all the main parcel couriers.
For example here is Royal Mail’s list which shows them as being excluded.
