But not good news for our dairy farmers.

Reduction in the price of milk is probably not a good thing. There's a cost to producing a pint of sustainable, ethical milk if the prevailing market price is less than that then only bad things happen.

I would rather they paid the farmers a decent rate for milk and kept the price in the shops where it was.
I don't think supermarkets will sell things at a loss though. I'd rather people appreciated the true cost of producing things ethically and sustainably and stopped thinking that everything cheap is great.

The supermarkets are lowering the price at retail, rather than increasing the price they should pay the farmers more, that does not mean the supermarkets would have to sell at a loss.

You think the supermarkets are lowering the price at retail without impact on farmers? You think that the price of an ethical sustainable pint of milk is less than 40p? Can i sell you a bridge?

I don't know why people in the UK have such a weird quasi-American attitude to food where as long as it's cheap then it's good.

The supermarkets are already paying suppliers below the cost of production, I am very clearly saying that the farmers should be paid more, because the current pricing structure makes dairy farming almost unsustainable in the UK.

I do not know why you think that, I am saying they should making food cheaper and should pay farmers more, the exact opposite of whatever that post was insinuating.

The supermarkets are SELLING below the price of sustainable ethical production. And people are reacting with glee when the price drops. That why I made the comments I did. The idea they can drop the prices and pay the farmers more is an interesting one.
  • One pint of semi-skimmed milk, delivered to the door by the milkman is 84p but in Sainsburys it's 95p. Profiteering by Sainsburys.
