  • 500ml of semi skimmed is 85-90p.  If I bought more I would waste it.  But I supposeI could buy 4 pts and freeze 3/4 of it to use later........

The price is only going one way. If you've got space it's worth doing that. I understand that advice is:

You can safely store frozen milk in your freezer for up to 6 months, but it's best if you can use it within 1 month of freezing. You can freeze whole milk, but it doesn’t freeze as well as skimmed and semi-skimmed milk.

I found myself in the unenviable position of running out of milk this week. I lasted exactly 2 days without drinking tea and found coffee made with cream to be disgusting so when I next drove I bought 6 pints from Aldi and it was well over the £2 mark.

Milk is for the first time more expensive than fuel. Finally we are showing a bit of respect to cows.
Milk is still cheaper than fuel. A 4 pint bottle is about 2.2 litres and is £1.55 at Tesco, 68p per litre, unleaded petrol was 166p per litre at Tesco.

If farmers are getting 46p per litre, then 68p per litre isn't bad to process it and pay for a bottle, refridgeration etc. The farmers should still be getting more, but I think the main change is the supermarkets are no longer using milk as a loss leader.

Milk is still sold as a "loss-leader" & so the price on the shelf bears no relation to that the supermarkets have actually paid for the milk.
This practice does mean that the consumer essentially has no idea of the true value of milk & all the costs involved to get the product to them.  :/

  • The last 4 pint I bought at Sainsbury's had a 10 day life...so definitely a cheaper way to buy

But that disparity has always been there.
When the price of four pint bottles dropped down to £1 due to the competition between the stores, 1 pint was about 50p and 2 pints about 75p. So I think the 2pint bottle has risen disproportionally, but 1pint being half the price of 4pints has been that way for a while.
    So then
    • 4pt has increased 55% (£1.55 vs £1.00)
    • 2pt has increased 67% (£1.25 vs £0.75)
    • 1pt has increased 78% (£0.89 vs £0.50)
That's the point I'm making - the disparity was always there, but it has been significantly worsened by the recent increases.
  • 6 pints is £2.19 at best (notes how the bigger supermarkets now use "Aldi price match" as the benchmark). I generally get through this in a week, and that's just in tea and coffee. If someone could invent anything plant based that behaved the same way in hot drinks and tasted the same, I would happily pay £2.19/L.

  • My OH buys the gold top milk and that costs £1.60~£1.70 a litre now depending on where he buys it normally. Today he picked it up for £1.12 due to it being cheaper using a certain app.

When I buy vegan milk, I make my own when I can but have a few UHT in also, it is usually cheaper than his milk. It has been this way for a good while now.

We both on average go through a litre of our own milk a week; so while we've noticed the increase in price it hasn't impacted our budget as much as other products have.
I am a vegan woman. My OH is a lovely omni guy :D

    Don't think it is really.

Quick look on Tesco and their value brand soya drink is 55p a litre but all other non-dairy milks are £1.15 a litre. Semi-skimmed milk (based on buying a 4pint bottle) is 68p a litre. UHT is 75p a litre.
So yes if you want cheap soya milk, it is slightly cheaper than cows milk, but if you want coconut, oat or almond milk drinks it isn't.
