  • I have been offered two tariffs by British Gas, one by email and one on my account.

    Fixed Jul23v3 (online)

    Gas:
    Standard unit rate
    11.235p / kWh
    Standing charge
    24.480p / day*

    Electricity:
    Standard unit rate
    39.898p / kWh
    Standing charge
    36.180p / day*

    Exclusive Jul23v2 (email)

    Gas:

    Standard unit rate
    10.482p / kWh
    Standing charge
    30.645p / day*

    Electricity:

    Standard unit rate
    38.295p / kWh
    Standing charge
    47.825p / day*

I asked on the chat about the Loyalty Jun23v2 but was given the same rates as for the Fixed Jul23v3 for it.

Tough decision as I only moved into my flat at the end of March so don't know what the average consumption will be. Currently we're talking 3 units gas per month and about 55kwh electricity.

The exclusive Jul 23v2 is about 26% more expensive but the standing charges are much higher than the fixed.

I live in a 1-bed newbuild property on my own and my consumption is super low so I am actually thinking I might switch to the Fixed Jul23v3 as the standing charges are low. It is about 32.5% more expensive than the standard variable I'm on now.

  • Took me about 2 hours to talk BG into giving me the loyalty jul23v2 on Saturday via web chat after seeing that others had gotten it on here that day.

It was initially denied to me and they only relented when I asked to speak to a manager but the rates they offered me are the following:

    Gas unit rate 10.534
    Standing 29.959

    elec 36.115
    standing 37.62

i don’t understand how different rates have been quoted to different people for the same tariff. Isn’t the tariff rates standard?

EDF are offering me their Fix Total Service Long-Term today with rates fixed until 30 June 2024.

    Electricity unit rate 42.37p
    Standing charge
    49.65p per day

    Gas unit rate
    12.512p
    Standing charge
    27.22p

If I accept this my annual energy costs will be
£3,503 compared to £2,292 currently so a 52.8% increase if my sums are correct.

I think I'll just stick with their standard tarriff for now
      :( and keep looking

Just read Martins updated advice re fixing or not. He is suggesting to fix if the rate is less than +35% above the current or +40% if you want price stability.
I'm with octopus and my fix ran out a couple of months ago. I am therefor on the
    Flexible Octopus Tarrif:
Direct Debit Electricity/kWh Standing Chg Gas/kWh Standing Chg
    Cost/Year
    £147.68 29.23p 37.65p 7.34p 27.22p
    £1,772.16

The Loyal Octopus 12M Fixed Tarrif on offer is:
Direct Debit Electricity/kWh Standing Chg Gas/kWh Standing Chg
    Cost/Year
    £207.91 41.44p 37.65p 11.17p 27.22p
    £2,494.92

That makes an annual difference of + £722.76 or Just under +41%

I'm struggling to decide if fixing is the right thing to do. I don't want a huge jump in October or next year but +40% seems a bit high. I keep flipping between fix for stability and stay variable as it saves money now. Like many on here I wish I had a crystal ball.

For the last couple of months, Octopus's fixed tariff has seemed quite high compared to other suppliers. Over that time the other suppliers' offers have crept up and Octopus is beginning to look similar to them.
The cheapest open-market fix is this tariff from E.ON Next, which is quite similar:

If you want the guarantee of a 12-month fix, the Octopus deal isn't terrible. If you're happy to take the chance that October-s cap could end up higher, then stick with the Flexible offer.

    Hello All,

I am a customer of British Gas and am getting emails offering me "Exclusive Fixed Energy v17" - anyone else had that?

I have all the details I need (I think), but not sure what to do. Do I assume a huge jump in October - and drop in April?

    CURRENT DEAL:
I was on Energy Plus Home Protection v11 (fix comes to an end 24/06/2022) and this costs £1,017.30 per year.

    THE VARIABLE RATE DEAL:
The Standard Variable Tariff is: £1,973.49 estimated annual cost.
Standing charge Electricty is: 48.53p per day.
Elect unit rate: 27.36p per kWh
Standing charge gas is: 27.22p per day.
Gas unit rate is: 7.28p per kWh

    EMAIL FIXED OFFER:
On "Exclusive Fixed Energy v17 the estimated annual cost is: £2,545.29.
Standing charge Electricty is: 55.38p per day.
Elect unit rate: 33.05p per kWh
Standing charge gas is: 34.07 per day.
Gas unit rate is: 10.49p per kWh

Choose the fix or variable I've been offered? Or phone and haggle for better? Or leave British Gas? Tricky.

    Welcome to the forum.

While the fixed tariff is expensive, the increase of the SVT currently predicted for Electricity is 40p to 40p compared to the 33.05p offered on the fix, and 11p to 11.8p compared to the 10.49p. Of course that is not written in stone and might change.

There is no possibility to phone them and haggle, either you take the deal or you don't.

Same with leaving British gas, all companies have more or less the same SVT, and only two companies might even take you on SVT if you call them, EDF and Octopus. The only company which currently allows you to join on a fixed tariff is EON, and the rates for electricity are more expensive than the predicted new SVT.

    See the post before yours.

  • From my experience and calling around (or trying to as wait times are tricky)
OVO would not take me on
Octopus 12m fixed 48% over cap
    Scottish Energy 67% over cap
loyalty jul23v2 I can see is
35% over cap...but I am wating to see if I can actually get a quote
EDF 2year fixed 56% over cap
    Hope this helps...

Are there any providers worth moving to ?
Every time I check my EDF account the tariffs they are offering are going up.

Currently at £348 per month on a 2 year deal :(

Per the MSE article, no there probably aren't.
EDF's "Fix Total Service June 24v2" (if they're offering it to you) is a better deal than you'll get elsewhere.
