I’ll be very surprised if this actually happens:

    a) giving everyone in the uk this amount of help will be astronomically expensive. Paid for by……yes the taxpayer which is all
    of us.

    b) it is essentially a labour/lib dem backed idea so the conservatives would be keen not to adopt it.

    c) some people don’t need the help, or need far less help.

    d) both PM candidate seem to have ruled it out.

Those that haven’t already need to change their behaviour on energy usage. But help needs to be targeted most at those that quite literally can’t afford it, with probably an increase in the help already offered for the rest of the population. We cannot be totally protected from this I feel.

    Well that’s another possibility!  :)

Seriously, though, the impact of an 80% increase on 1 October is too big for any government to ignore, on top of fast rising general inflation, and the only question is whether they deal with it by direct, targeted, payments or artificially reducing the increase in the price cap. The advantage of the latter is that it reduces inflation, which in turn reduces the amount the government pays out in benefits, state pensions and public sector pensions.

All guesswork of course, and it doesn’t help that Johnson’s abandoned the sinking Tory ship while still grabbing his pay and expenses, but they will have to do something. And soon.

There wouldn’t need to be any additional tax on some of the proposals, and tax isn’t always taken immediately anyway. The vast Covid business support payments, for example, came from borrowing, which will in turn come from future taxes.

Resolving intergenerational tax however is a huge discussion point!

Strange, I thought Johnson was pushed out. I'm sure he would have been more than happy to stay as PM.

As for doing something, the government is already implementing a cost of living support plan albeit it will need to be enhanced due to it being based on lower price cap predictions but I'd be wary of industry lobbied solutions as they generally favour the industry and not the customer.

He was pushed out as leader of the Conservative Party. And for very good reason, in that he’s an inveterate liar completely devoid of any integrity whatsoever.

My point is, though, that he’s still the Prime Minister of this country, still receiving pay and expenses as such, as are all the other ministers, but all effective government has ceased or been put on hold until early September when Truss (presumably) takes over. Despite the crises we’re facing on all fronts, and despite this particular one causing so much distress that it’s almost certainly going to lead to people taking their own lives.

Existing support is based on prices about to increase by around 80% and a much lower inflation rate. It’s wholly inadequate but we’ve so far had nothing but waffle from this zombie government.

And in terms of this thread, all that makes it impossible to judge what sort of fix is worth taking - or indeed whether to fix at all.

Similar to me my fix ends and renewal is on 8th October with same renewals plans. Are we able to take the fix plan "Next online V20" now and cancel it within 14 days as there is a price cap announcement tomorrow?

i've just used the Martin Lewis should i fix calculator and its come up at 206% more than my current tarriff. . ''Our best guess is the new tariff you've been offered is too expensive. Our rule of thumb is, if you've been offered a year's fix at no more than 115% above your current price-capped tariff, or 120% more if you very strongly value budgeting certainty, it's worth considering.''

My issue is i have a PHEV car which i have to charge every night for work. I've only had it since May so its not truly reflected in my estimated usage. Im trying to figure out whether it will actually be worth charging it once i move over..
