Also my general airport experience when it comes to checks, the staff are not particularly stringent in every case.

@eDicky Thanks for this. I am feeling adventurous.
Let us know how you got on - it's been 3 days!

My partner works for border force, she reckons you stand no chance but would be funny to let her know if you somehow managed it.
It's too soon to know - according to the original post they're not due to travel until tomorrow (28th).

If you get through, then there is an "emergency travel document" possibility for a £100 non refundable fee...

Personally I doubt you'll make it onto the plane out.
This wouldn’t be necessary for the  return journey as there  is no issue with entering U.K. with a passport that is more than 10 years old as long as it hasn’t expired . OP passport expires 02 July 2022 .

It is only for entry to Schengen countries ( from outside of Schengen area ) that  passport must meet 2 requirements. It must be:
    • less than 10 years old on the day you enter
    • valid for at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave

Surely if a UK passport is more than 10 years old - then it will be expired ?
Apologies if I'm missing something obvious.

The OP’s passport was issued 02 Dec 2011 and  expires 02 July 2022. = More than 10 years

Prior to 2018 if you renewed your U.K. passport before it expired any remaining months ( up to 9 )  were added on . So the passport was for 10years + the remaining  months from the last passport .

That doesn’t happen anymore but there are still people ( like the OP ) who have these passports. They are accepted for travel to many countries . However EU will not accept passports over 10 years old .

Or maybe they will ? We are waiting  to hear from OP how they got on today ….

I think some of the confusion/uncertainty could be resolved by changing the terminology now from expires (UK government) to valid until (as appropriate) - in light of the Schengen Area rules coming into effect post Brexit.
Other countries outside the SA may have followed suit ?
Happy to be corrected if that is innacurate.
There is another aspect to this scenario - if the OP knowingly tries to fly on an invalid passport and is only stopped at the boarding gate - his luggage will likely have been loaded on to the aircraft - and will have to be removed, possibly causing a delay with subsequent ramifications.
The ideal situation is for for passport validity to be scrutinised at the check in desk in order to prevent such happening.

I can't remember the last time my passport wasn't scrutinised at check in, either in person if travelling with checked in luggage or on one of the machines that print the boarding passes after scanning the photo page if travelling hand luggage only. - either of those should identify the invalid passport.

Hays Travel checked our passports in the store when I recently made two separate visits and different bookings in the last few months.

There is no issue with U.K. passports that have been issued since September 2018 as they are only issued for 10 years maximum ( 5 years for children)

The valid until date would differ depending on which country you are entering - some require 3 months before expiry  some 6 and some countries will accept them right up until the expiry date . It all depends on your destination.
