I am also thinking of just turning up at the airport and seeing if they will let me through as I have nothing to lose now.

Are you expecting to receive preferential treatment ?
No. But I do know that enforcement is lacking sometimes when it comes to regulations. Maybe I'll slip through somehow.

Which is quite scary for our Border Control that you are hoping to wing-it with an expired passport.  How long ago did you last fly?
Last time I flew and in previous decades there was no routine passport check by UK border control on departure, it's done by airline staff or their agents.
But as mentioned, their screening is severe because of the penalties for delivering passengers without correct documents.
However if they did mistakenly allow someone to travel, the immigration officer at the arrival airport, perhaps relying on the diligence of the airline, could possibly be feeling lazy and fail to notice. However I'm not recommending that the OP try it, unless they feel particularly adventurous...

How do you "know" border arrangements are lax?

Your passport expired 5 months ago - I'd imagine it will get picked up when it's scanned at electronic gates if not with a physical check, and it will need to be lax in both the UK and Greece.
Because I have read other peoples experiences on the internet and some have gotten away with it where they have not cared enough to check the passports in detail.

Also my general airport experience when it comes to checks, the staff are not particularly stringent in every case.

@eDicky Thanks for this. I am feeling adventurous.

I mean I have planned that day to go to the airport anyways. So even if there is a 5% chance I will get through I might as well try. If i get stuck on the other side then I'll just pay my way back. Wish me luck LOL

If you get through, then there is an "emergency travel document" possibility for a £100 non refundable fee...

Personally I doubt you'll make it onto the plane out.

This wouldn’t be necessary for the  return journey as there  is no issue with entering U.K. with a passport that is more than 10 years old as long as it hasn’t expired . OP passport expires 02 July 2022 .

It is only for entry to Schengen countries ( from outside of Schengen area ) that  passport must meet 2 requirements. It must be:
    • less than 10 years old on the day you enter
    • valid for at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave

    Doen't really help much.

“We are engaging with the Commission to seek further clarification and, if this is no longer the case, will update our advice in due course.”

We have already been told the EU will  make an announcement in the spring.

Until then some countries,  such as Portugal, are insisting on the three months being included in the ten years.

There has been an announcement of sorts, I don't know if it may help

There is an error in that article:

The UK government issues new passports with 10 years validity, but will add on the extra months remaining from the previous passport if it is renewed early.
They used to add extra months but haven't done for some time - at least dating back to 2018.

That's true - 'The UK government issues' should read 'used to issue'. It is of course all those previously issued passports with the extra months that are causing problems for so many who are unaware of the new requirement.

Let us know how you got on - it's been 3 days!

My partner works for border force, she reckons you stand no chance but would be funny to let her know if you somehow managed it.
