Late flight from Manchester meant I missed my connecting flight

Last Sunday I was flying to Turkey from Manchester.   I had two flights booked the first from Manchester to Antalya (Pegasus Airline) with a second connecting flight from Antalya to Izmir (SunExpress).
The first flight took off two hours late meaning that when I arrived in Antalya my flight had already left.  There were no more flights that day so I had to book an airport and a new flight  for the following morning.  Who is responsible for refunding me this extra expense.  I assumed it was the first flight company and have written to them but so far had no response.
Any suggestions on a course of action?  I did have travel insurance and I paid for all flights and hotel on a credit card.

Thanks  for reading.

Was this one booking with two flights, or two flights booked individually?

Unless OP comes back and shows otherwise this is 2 separate flights - seems an odd routing given true connecting flights with either Pegasus or Turkish at at similar times via Istanbul are within 10% of the price

Were the flights with Pegasus and Sun Express separate bookings?  If so then nobody has any liability for the connection because they're separate bookings so that's a risk you took.

Flight delay compensation won't kick in either until the flight is 4 hours late.  You could maybe look at your travel insurance, would depend on what it covers.

If separate bookings then you carry the risk unless your travel insurance will cover this (you would need to check your policy documents)
often for separate tickets a gap of 5 hours is suggested to allow for any delays
If booked on a single ticket the connection is protected and Pegasus would have been responsible to rebook you to your final destination
  • The flights were one booking through Go to Gate - They were the only available flights to get me to Izmir on that day.   They are with separate airlines but booked through Go To Gate  as  4 flights  2 out and 2 back.
I have contacted Go to Gate who said I need to contact airlines.  I can't find any email contact or address to get hold of Pegasus just a Turkish Telephone number which I called and was cut off.

But when booking through a shoddy outfit like GoToGate it's likely that they put you on two separate bookings with the two airlines, can you confirm that they were a single through booking..?

it does not matter if they are on one gotogate booking...what matters is if they are on the same ticket which would come with protection. When you looked at your booking on the Pegasus website, did it show the SunExpress flight also? if not then the fact you have separate tickets mean no airline is responsible to reimburse you.
You carry the risk yourself unless your insurance covers this.

A dodgy company like that probably booked you on 2 separate flights.

One booking doesn't mean that the flights are one single flight with a change, it can mean 2 separate flights meaning that you don't get a penny back as you missed your flight.

You need to find out which it is.

99.9% sure that these are separate tickets. Both carriers are low cost ones and I don’t think they have any interline connections.  I suspect G2G highlight this as a self-transfer at AYT.

Unfortunately it does appear to be two separate bookings, even though they were booked on the same website at the same time.  This means that neither Pegasus or Sun Express are responsible for the connection and therefore neither airline has any responsibility toward you so trying to chase them will be a waste of time.

GoToGate do indeed sell separate flights at the same time.  As @Westin says, they do highlight this at the time of booking.  A quick dummy booking right now for the same routing it is highlighted in the initial search results:

When you click on that flight it opens up further information:

And then when you click through to "Book" the following is displayed at the top of the booking screen:

So they do make people aware.  In addition, they seem to offer their own Self-transfer Guarantee. The devil is in the detail however as it does come with plenty of T&Cs and get-outs for the agent.

    Self-transfer Guarantee information page: Gotogate
    Self-transfer Guarantee T&C's: Gotogate (Section 8.2)

@Heady_Tulip have a look at your G2G booking conformation and see if the self-transfer guarantee is included on your booking.  Then have a read through the T&Cs.  I feel you may fall at the first hurdle as one of the conditions is to contact GoToGate without delay - which you don't mention if you did?  The information page does state:

    Contact us at once

Contact us by phone as soon as possible if you miss your connection. If this happens outside our regular opening hours, you must book a new ticket on your own. We will reimburse you afterwards provided you have booked a ticket in the same fare class. If you choose to upgrade the ticket you will have to pay the difference.

I couldn't find reference to this in the T&Cs though.  Not sure what time of day it was but you could maybe go back to G2G and say you tried to contact them but couldn't so made your own arrangements and now you want these refunded in accordance with Self-transfer Guarantee.  I'm almost certain they'll try to dodge it but worth a try.
