    There's an excellent tutorial here

You keep saying 'speed up' and as said above, the best way to do this would be a clean install onto a new SSD

also downloading it to a USB drive and installing from there.
My guess is you're not actually booting from the USB. Rather than spend money (a local compute shop will charge anything from £0 to an hours labour.)  Have you got a repair cafe nearby?  If they look at computers will be worth a go.
If you put your general location in your Profile, somebody here may be able to come and help you.

Hmm, I think Im going to take it to an expert. Ive spent the better part of 3 days trying to speed up the laptop and get Windows 10 on it and Im getting nowhere!!

How much do you think it woudl take someone to get Windows 10 working on it? £50? £200?

    Thanks
    That'll depend on the someone.

Honestly, for that money, you can get a new machine.

Have you actually tried it as a totally clean install, creating install media (USB etc) and putting a brand new SSD or HDD in it?
Youre probably right, I should just get a new laptop, but I hate chucking stuff away!

I havnt tried doing a totally clean install. I am tempted as I have nothing to lose at this point. It does already have a SSD in it. I bought it from Dell in 2015. Ive been buying Dells for 20+ years and they are indestructible!! (in my experience)

Is there a good video guide for doing a fresh install? Ill look myself on Youtube later.

If it looks like it'll costs £100 plus I'd suggest getting a new machine, or, more sensibly, a refurbished one. You say yours is a 2015 Dell? Have a look at itzoo, who specialise in refurbs.  Their Dell laptop listing is here: https://itzoo.co.uk/collections/cheap-dell-laptops

There's a basic £199 machine running W10 from an SSD (small size, but that may be all you need really, external drives and the cloud are your friend!) so should be fast at booting, and probably similar age to your existing machine, might be younger. And lots of others to look at if the spec of that one doesn't appeal.

There's usually a 10% off voucher available if you google (edit to add - currently a 20% one advertised on the site). I manage 4 pcs and a laptop, and the most recent two of those are Itzoo purchases. Not sure I'd ever buy new again!

(another edit to add: do note that Win11 is now available but will not, ever, run on many older machines.  Win10 support ends in just 3.5 years - oct 2025, which is likely to be a bit annoying to those (like me) who run machines for 10 years plus. So now you either spend little by refurbing your own machine/buying a refurb (since either may become unsupported by 2026) or buy costly brand new that can upgrade to Win11.)

Then that's your problem. You need to boot from the USB, ie, you need to go into the Bios and change the boot order so that the USB is first, then save and exit. There are loads of YT videos and help online regarding running a clean install of W10.
